Hey, did you ever feel like there are songs from your country and in your language with lyrics so good, or a tune so moving that just deserve to be heard and understood by people abroad?
I opened this thread to see if there are more people like me here who really enjoy translating songs in their own language, and also to open up to new styles and languages of music. Feel free to discuss the lyrics or their interpetations as well, and give background if there are national "injokes", language specific expressions or wordplay involved.

I'll open with a rather gloomy start:

This song is by the Israeli band "Kaveret"(meaning:beehive), they were a big thing in the 70s and had a few reunions throughout the decades following, they influenced Israeli music a lot by introducing a unique mix of alternative rock and humoristic nonesensical lyrics sometimes with political implications, this is one of my favorites by them, it is not humoristic or stylish/complex in any way, and a rare one by them in that sense, but the deciption of the character here, a grown depressed 'nobody' who does not act his age and is brought down by comparing himself to the other "successful" people, and his escape by wishing to return to his childhood(as described best in the lines in the ending)

"Yeled Mizdaken"(ילד מזדקן in hebrew) - "Boy's getting old"

Lyrics:

Boy's getting old
Boy's getting worse [actually translates to "boy's going bad" as in a machine going bad/a fruit going bad AND a person getting worse]
Learns the bottom line only after that he falls

Gets his words all wrong
Boy, leave it alone [its written as if someone is telling him to 'stop trying']
That is what he's told when he falls down in the street

Today you woke up
At two in the afternoon
You saw what time it is
Such blackness in your eyes [translates more edgy that it is, darkness in someones eyes in hebrew can mean that something shocked/depressed you]

What can you do
When dad gets angry?
This should be the year
when you're supposed to marry.

Boy's getting old
Boy's getting worse
Learns the bottom line only after that he falls

You got up and went
to Tel Aviv in the morning
there you saw people
who are worth a pretty penny

What is the price
of an educated boy,
who does not want to live
and feels like a nobody

Boy's a Diplomat
Talks plenty
For us its not a lot

Lives in his bed
Lights the heater on
How peculiar it is
when you live out of boredom [as opposed to the term 'dying of boredom']

Dear mom [can also mean "exspensive", which might link to the people who are worth a pretty penny]
Boy's getting old
Its really sad
when someone lends your son ["lend" here can also mean "loan", it is unclear which one was intended but I think that 'loan' fits with the whole money, or lack of, theme that is going on in the song].

Take me to the side
Talk with me alone
I want to build with
Bricks on the rug

Lama Li Lakachat La'Lev("Why should I take it to heart?") - Arik Einstein+ Shalom Hanoch
These two(especially Arik) are considered by many(me among them) as two of the greatest musicians/singers/songwriters in Israels musical history. This song was written by both and composed by shalom. Arik sings the mellow minoric parts and Shalom sings the majoric happy bridge.
