"Whenever a creature moves through its environment, it leaves behind
tiny fragments of DNA from skin, scales, feathers, fur, faeces and
urine,” he told the Otago Daily Times.
"This DNA can be captured, sequenced and then used to identify that
creature by comparing the sequence obtained to large databases of known
genetic sequences from 100,000s of different organisms – if an exact
match can't be found we can generally figure out where on the tree of
life that sequence fits.
Is the Loch Ness monster real? Scientists launch new investigati..
just drain the whole lake, problem solved
better yet just lidar map the damn place
As a Scotsman I find this fucking embarrassing. It's literally a running joke and a tourism trap for us.
I dunno man if we're still finding new species of animals in places like Africa, Asia, the America's, etc, I don't have doubts with new technology that they'll find at least something unique in Loch Ness, though if they honest to god find THE monster then holy shit close that lake off and make it even more of an attraction.
No doubt it would be really badass but if something were to live in there (or did) it would need to have family and friends to share those waters with. We would have had one tangled up in nets or beached by now.
It's a freshwater loch that leads out to the ocean via a tangle of shallow and deep rivers so I'm not sure we are talking about a deep sea creature here.

You know, even as a kid I thought this looked pretty fake. I mean, it looks super zoomed in and the angle is all wonky...
Wait, the Loch Ness monster is still a thing?.. Really?
That looks like some guy trying to make a goose neck with his arm above the water lol
Severely doubt there's anything there now but I think something could have lived there years ago. There's a few hundred year old accounts of it but they could just be exaggerated or lies.
I still love stuff like this though. Like mothman or Bigfoot it's fun to read into some of the lore around them.
I thought it was well established that it's just a toy submarine?
So yeah, they're gathering up evidence in hopes to find new unrecorded organisms in the loch and compare what they get to an international database
"While the prospect of looking for evidence of the Loch Ness monster is the hook to this project, there is an extraordinary amount of new knowledge that we will gain from the work about organisms that inhabit Loch Ness - the UK's largest freshwater body."
The whole search for nessie thing is just them thinking they might find some sort of biological evidence for the sightings.
Sounds like New Mexico and Roswell.
New Mexico has occassionally been described by those of us who live here as "Old Mexico, but with aliens".
