I wonder if the curved screens on now all samsung phones have something to do with not wanting to be sued for using a rounded rectangle? just a thought, this case is the undead though and won't seemingly end
Every fucking phone is a rounded rectangle. My Oneplus X is like an iphone clone with the rounded corners and the glass-mirror back cover, my SO-s Xiaomi Redmi 4x could be confused for an iphone if you look at it from 5m away. The fingerprint sensor is located right where there'd be an Apple logo and the MIUI OS started as iOS clone.
The "rounded rectangle" and "colourful grid of icons" patents are so dumb, but samsung did push a little bit hard against them, that's true. S1/S2 vs iPhone 3GS is so dumb if you look at it now. Very different phones from the outside, compared to current market where my mother doesn't know whose phone is on the cupboard, as they all look so similar.
Patents are a joke
Apple patented "colorful grid of icons"? Go fuck yourself apple. This is one step off from patenting the shape of a circle.
I can't believe the courts bow down to Apple's patent trolling behavior, especially since most of the shit Apple complains about has been part of Android for years, and Android is significantly more ubiquitous than iOS is.
howd they even win a patent claim on a rounded rectangle? Xiaomi introduced that style of phone i guess they didnt patent it though because thats ridiculous, couldnt samsung claim prior art and tell them to fuck off
They've been trying for, what, six years now? Turns out the legal system gets long-winded and messy when both parties are sitting on billions in disposable cash.
For all of you calling Apple "patent trolls here", this lawsuit dates back to 2010/11 and Samsung have just kept appealing it over and over again. The lawsuit is about the Samsung Galaxy S which blatantly copied the iPhone in its overall design, including OS.

That doesn't seem too blatant to me. It's a pretty basic design. They did not copy the single button design of the iPhone. So essentially they have to pay $530,000,000 for laying out their icons in a square grid?
Is that what you're getting at?
The shape of the phone is nearly identical, at a time when phones looked pretty diverse:

Those are all rounded triangles, not cool of them to copy Apple like that. 😕
It's not just about the phone shape (and it was shown above, that while they were the same "brick with big screen" design, they had many differences from iPhone, while first Galaxy S was made to look like it), but the bundled software. Remember, it's 2008, a lot of things we are taking for granted nowadays were new back then.

Also, Samsung literally had a document about how to copy iPhone better.
This is the company who had to be told by a judge that they don't own the visage of an apple when they tried to sue an apple growing company for using an apple as its logo. Fuck Apple.
Patents aren't dumb, but design and programming patents certainly are.
