By becoming the prime minister again!
Oh he'll step down, become Prime Minister, and basically run things behind the scenes just like last time. Then he will become president again in 2030. Rinse and repeat until the day he dies.
This. It's consecutive terms - he'll step down for a term while running things from the back and then hop back in for another 2 terms.
Putin won't cease being the leader of the country, he'll just have a different job title for a little while.
He used to be Prime Minister, then ran for the Presidential election and have the new Prime Minister of Russia transfer all PM powers to the President's office.
Following this trend I expect him to run for election as the Speaker of the Russian Parliament and have the President transfer all powers to his new position.
And when Putin steps down Medvedev will become president again because he's such a good prime minister
hmmm... just in time for Trump's hypothetical second term as American president would expire 🤔
Rumour has it they already have their hot tub retreat log cabin for two booked.
I refuse to believe a country with nearly 150 million people somehow only has one dude who's got the exact set of qualities required to be president. This shit's outright impossible and I'm convinced the only reason this appears to be true is because Putin has a well oiled propaganda machine set to convince everyone anyone but him is a fucking retard and has worked hard to eliminate any competition that's actually a threat by both literally and figuratively killing it off.
It's textbook dictator bullshit to claim "I'm the only one who can run this shitshow".
I usually don't post anything here on facepunch, but I kinda feel like I should now.
It's not like Putin is best choice for president, it's just everyone else even worse. If you take someone from mainstream parties, who you choose? KPRF, who act like trying to be commies again gonna work somehow, or, maybe LDPR, whose leader, Vladimir Zhirinovsky, even more insane and stupid than Trump?
OK, how about opposition, you may ask? Well, all they can do is throw feces at each other, and when everything goes to hell, they always blame government.
Then there is Navalny, who IS trying to do something, but honestly, even if he gets any power, I feel like he just be too afraid to use any of it, because right now, he playing as safe as its possible in Russian politics. But thats just will not work.
Then there is distrust of West and all liberal amongst population, because, well, West are partially at fault for all those thing that happened in 90x, they offered help when Soviet Union was dissolved, but when shit hit the fan, all "advisors" just silently ran away (no sources on that, just what i've heard about stuff in the Nineties).
Lots of people just apathetic about politics, because they have more important stuff in mind, like getting a job, trying to feed a family, and similar stuff.
Don't get me wrong, I know that Putin and his cronies will ruin Russia even more, if they will stay in power, and i want them to go away, but there is literally no way to do that without making things even worse, Russia just not ready enough for being more "western" and democratic
Wouldn't he be playing safe because Russia has a history of assassinating or arresting public dissenters (or both) that are very vocal about their opposition?
Yes, but too safe even for that. He trying to please everyone, one time he says that if he will be president, every corrupt politician will be arrested and put on trial, next day he says that if Putin confess about being greedy asshole and step down, he will be given immunity, then he trying to please liberals by promising being cool with West, and after that he licks nationalists asses by saying that he will not give Crimea back, unless its population will really want back. He is a populist, thats how its called, right? I not saying that he is a bad guy, it's just his style of changing things not gonna work at all. He playing by the rules in game, where breaking them, is only way to achieve something
Not a propaganda machine he says

Sure there's social and cultural reasons why Russians are wary of politicians but god damn you'd have to be blind not to see how hard the strings are being pulled when ridiculous ads showing anyone who's not Putin would run the country into the ground with dabbing black men in the army and state-mandated gay relationships.
pretty obvious by the way he emphasized the two terms in a row bit that he intends to do the prime minister to president twostep again.
He's been talking about it for quite some time so it's not exactly news here and this time we have to believe him. He is getting really old, you know. The problem is that he will most definitely hand the crown to someone with the same ideas aka Putin The Second, who is going to sit on the throne for decades doing the exact same things.
Nothing is going to change after Putin is gone, don't even count on it.
Plot twist, he steps down and Comrade Trump becomes President of Russia in his place. The perfect plan.
I assume he'd prefer Trump to run enemy countries into the ground instead of his own.
This is a heck of a statement consisting he is constitutionally required to step down after this term. "Yeah I guess I won't change the constitution and become dictator for life, even though I could"
I'm so glad that we have such a humble president, stepping down willingly like that!
I believe him. He's getting up there in numbers.
Well, considering that our government pretty much wiping their asses with constitution, he wont even need to change it, it's already mean nothing
Don't. He's already done this before. Two terms as president, then he let Medvedev be Pres while he was PM, now he's doing president again.
The laws only apply for CONSECUTIVE terms, not total.
This all sounds uncomfortably similar to what’s happening around here as well. Guess we haven’t really been too different from Russia lately. The main difference being our politicians still have to pretend they give at least 1/2 of a fuck about the rules.
You're assuming that Trump wouldn't just be the puppet he already is lol
I hope it is Medvedev again, so there's once again a European leader who is shorter than me. I seem to remember that he's something ridiculous like 5"5, or a similar height.
I have no idea if the constitution being written this way was an oversight, like in the case of the Italian constitution not explicitly forbidding foreigners from running for office, or if it was an intentional move. I'm going to go with the latter, as it is Russia, after all...
I'm sure he'll be back.
Congratulations, then I'm sorry to inform you that Cigarettes is right full stop. All other candidates are plain fucking retarded, conservative loonies or just incompetent old farts who should have retired long ago. Navalny is anything but a good presidential candidate.
I would finger the idea that Zhirinovsky might be a good candidate, but he has a bit of "fucking retarded, consertavie loonie or just incompetent old fart" mixed into a single persona, while, ironically, being the most educated political party leader in the entire RF.
The reason why your refusal to believe that a country with 150 million people can't find a suitable candidate is moot due do the fact that the entire fucking country is corrupt, and you will not find a single person as a government official or a political party representative not being corrupt as fuck. Once they get their "powers" as United Russia officials or something like that, they will later just resort to "setbacks" from governmental projects or bribes for using their power to manipulate the others who serviced it. And the people who have the most wealth AND being in the higher up government at the same time? 65+ granpas who amassed their wealth way back during the beginning of fall of the Soviet Union, and then an extra.
Russia politically is straight fucked, but unfortunately Putin, despite being... whatever kind of leader you might imagine he is, good or bad, he's very unfortunately the better choice at this moment.
Here's hoping shit changes in 6 years.
