Why is fruit so expensive in Japan?
They import so much fruit and veg. I was there for 2 weeks recently and the only vegetable I could get was Onions and Leeks. I wasn't aware of it either.
Cause if you read the article, you'll know A single pair of premium melons on Saturday fetched a record 3.2 million yen (US$29,300) at auction in Japan, where the fruit is regarded as a status symbol. Seasonal fruit offerings in Japan routinely attract massive sums from buyers seeking social prestige, or from shop owners wanting to attract customers to "ooh and aah" over the extravagant edibles. That explains a lot of JoJo part 8 that had me wondering
Unless you start shitting gold nuggets after eating those I don't think that's a fair deal.
And if you had read the post you replied to before trying to make a zinger you would've known they meant regular fruit, not the melons in question From the article: Even ordinary fruit is comparatively expensive in Japan and it is not unusual for a single apple to cost as much as US$3.
And hence the prestige causes people to view fruits as something of a status symbol, which they give as really nicely packed gifts to friends/families. Which, in turn, causes people to increase prices. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/113069/4dd0229b-3d51-448f-98de-d274a34fb0d4/image.png
Not saying the price is fair, but Japanese fruits are really great tbh
I only like the peculiar looking cube watermelons. Just their odd shape is enough of a seller for me.
This was not what I had in mind when I read the phrase 'premium melons', I feel cheated.
I guess being told "you'll be getting an orange for Christmas! " is seen as a good thing in Japan?
They just grow those into boxes. You could do the same from home.
So being a farmer in Japan is wildly profitable?
Only a fraction of the melons are good enough to sell at such prices, though.
If only it was true id become a farmer. ive done some time on Japanese farms, and the small ones ive worked on made maybe enough to keep the electricity on.
lived in Japan, cost me a kidney to get a pack of apples. doesn't surprise me at all
Yeah Japanese fruit is weird. My my girlfriend watches this channel a lot. https://youtu.be/NFIKZeHv-Ec Kind id an interesting look at the difference in regular fruit vs premium fruit.
"all we had in canada were these weird green melons that tasted like cucumber" wait, do people in canada NOT get cantaloupe? wtf, shits super common in the US
