TLDR since 2010 California uses a jungle primary system - instead of separate Dem and GOP primaries, all candidates from all parties are thrown into one primary and the top two advance to the general election, regardless of party. It's supposed to encourage moderate candidates.
However, this year the Dems have a shitload of candidates whereas the GOP only have a few. This could cause a split in the Dem vote, allowing the GOP candidates to take the top two spots.
This would mean that, in fucking California, some seats may not have the option of electing a Democrat this November. This could risk the Dems' shot at taking the House.
What are California's Republics like? Are they nutty or reasonably moderate?
They're actually some of the worst. Dana Rohrabacher and Devin Nunes for example
There's no chance whoever implemented it didn't expect this to happen.
You really need to use ranked choice voting or repeated votes with a system like this still, in which case they could have scrapped the concept of 'primaries' in the first place.
The candidates running in this with full knowledge they are risking the House just so they can get a moment in the spotlight are political scum.
It's weird cus one of the lessons of 2016 was "don't clear the way for one candidate, have a big competitive primary and trust the process to pick the best candidate" but in this system there's a perverse incentive to do the opposite
And this is how you manage to fuck up taking Nunes' seat. GJ.
It's amazing how much knowledge we have as a society and we still manage to fuck up basic democracy. We're at the point where pretty much EVERYONE knows and can easily see the problem with doing it this way and we do it anyways.
Because it's a primary for all candidates rather than a primary for each 'House' of candidates. We shouldn't shy away from competition - but we also shouldn't leave it unrestricted.
Seems to me that they need to add ranked choice voting to make this system work, or else the party with the least candidates will always be OP
That's a ridiculous idea. What the fuck? Why are they investing time in implementing rules like this when countries around the world should be investing in implementing STV?!
They think this good idea, Because they thought this improved of get all state's political parties in same primary day.
But they forget the FPTP's spoiler effect is still problem in the United States and California, that cause newer candidates joined either both parties without limit barrier and most them in either same party wins.
Hopefully more young people will vote this year. I know I will.
With a kid in a white house these days, there's no doubt
Such a terrible primary system for the current climate. The left candidates who are behind should really bow out.
The centrists should bow out.
Or just drop the spoilers and let a smaller amount of candidates who matter compete
That's pretty much what I mean. In a normal primary, I'm all for candidates duking it out until the end, because it doesn't affect the general. This this system, having a bunch of candidates actually hurts one party's chances. It isn't good for them strategically.
Absolutely fucking bonkers, because they're appealing to the small subset of Californians that live in not-texas up north that tend to not like being associated with the rest of the state.
Well no democratic system is completely flawless.
If you said it's "flawless", Then you against reality by actually is so very (out)dated, corrupted politicians and candidates could use that as their benefit.
No dude, You just unintentionally attacking left-wing candidates but not center-right and right-wing ones instead?
Because I don't give a flying fuck what the right-wing does. If the Republican party wants to put in too many candidates and spoil their own primary, they should go for it! Hell, I'd celebrate it. I do care if the candidates on the left does it, because I want them to, you know, win.
Ok, But current Democratic Party also allowed right-wingers to run their party as means pandering to Republican voters.
They shouldn't be allowed in the party, let alone allowed to play spoiler.
you'd think cali would add a ranked choice system though to prevent this sort of thing
Ranked will not happen in the US until people start getting common sense genetic modifications in vitro.
De Leon and Feinstein. Whoever wins, we lose.
Or just genetic-neurologically modified brains for each uninformed voters to make them informed?
And besides I founded two stores day before and election started.
