After a sunny start to the Bank Holiday weekend, with temperatures reaching 27C (80.6F), Saturday's balmy evening eventually broke into a violent thunderstorm accompanied by heavy rain.
London Fire Brigade said it received more than 500 weather-related calls, most of them due to flooding.
In Warwickshire, five properties were struck by lightning and in Dawlish, Devon, a phone box burst into flames after a telephone pole was also hit by lightning.
Flights from Stansted Airport were disrupted on Sunday after the fuelling system was damaged by a lightning strike.

Nearly 1,000 properties were left without power in the Midlands following the storm and 17 flood alerts have been issued for parts of the Thames Valley.
So I know this kind of thunderstorm isn’t too common in Britain and everywhere on earth has a difference in climate but, to me, this just looks like a regular thunderstorm that I’d see where I am.
I’ve seen storms that literally constantly light the sky with lightning, though, so it would take a lot for a storm to impress me I guess. I also live right in the middle of tornado alley, so go figure.
Glad to see no one was really hurt or injured. A very gorgeous view.
Why state that you're aware this doesn't happen much in the UK, then go on to say it doesn't impress you because you live in Tornado Alley, what was the point?
A very good question. I have been wondering why myself.
I was in a weird state of mind after waking up, I guess? It doesn't excuse the pointlessness of the post, however.
I'd say a thunderstorm with 60,000 strikes would be quite a sight regardless of where you're from.
I love to watch the storms when they roll on through. As safe as I can of course.
seeing all that shit last night was insane
It was super cool to watch all that sheet lightning, no wonder ancient people thought there were some vengeful gods up there.
I miss the zing rating.
Its been steady heat here in europe for the past few weeks, even here in finland it has been unusually hot for may. So it was only matter of time until the storms arrive. After all that moisture that the heat raises from the sea has to go somewhere.
We haven't got any storms or rain for that matter yet but it is definetly bound to happen sooner or later.
It was quite zappy here at the Dutch-Belgian border. Being a thunderstorm lover, I was in heaven.
