So would a permanent Russian military presence in Poland. Maybe that's why Poland's inviting US troops to come live with them.
I can't blame them. Poland's practically been invaded by everyone and their mother in Europe, so an extra deterrent from the West might make them feel a bit better about it, especially considering how Russia's been behaving lately.
I sense an impending "oppressed Russian minority."
isn't their government run by pro russian authoritarian types though?
So was Ukraine's
Nationalist and possibly authoritarian, but not pro-Russian. Poland has been firmly anti-Russia at least since they were backstabbed by them in 1939. Russia even counter-sanctioned Poland over their support for harsher sanctions on Russia, support for Euromaidon and the new Ukrainian government, and their constant requests to NATO for additional security measures; these requests started after the invasion of Ukraine and the topic at hand (US - Polish joint military base) is one of them.
I think this gives some great insight as to whats going on with russia right now.

They're right. Can you imagine what the response would be if, for example, Russia had troops in Mexico? Congress would be frothing at the mouth for war. I know "Russia is the Great Satan" is the popular way of viewing international politics these days but I don't see how piling up Western forces on their border (the US has ships in the Black Sea as well) is anything but a really bad idea.
all the border states have been nato members for some decades already like lithuania
Russia can't do anything about it which is why NATO is pissing on their lawn. they lost half of their population after the breakup of the USSR.
HALF OF THEIR POPULATION.
That is a back broken economy if ever their was one and a back broken economy leads to a military crumbling under its own expense. It also doesn't help that NATO countries (and China) in general offer a higher quality of life than Russia causing even more brain drain. In this world of prosperity where the population is ever increasing, Russia has been set back and will most likely never recover to the former economic might of the USSR.
The only cards Russia does have up its sleeve is using technology to fuck with you and blackmail, otherwise it is a hollowed out shell of its former Super power status and writhes in the fact it never will become that powerful again.
That would make more sense if America had conquered Mexico and had them in an forced alliance under a puppet government for just under half a century, and Mexico joined a military alliance because they feared we would do it again as soon as we got our strength back.
We haven't done that for over 150 years!
What's Russia going to do? Annex Poland and march through Europe unimpeded while the rest of the world watches? Just look at what happened after Crimea, which was just one region. Their economy took a massive hit from the resulting sanctions. All this while trying to keep their ducks in a row in Syria. The international backlash would be united and swift. It's not gonna happen.
just want to say what a fantastic video this is
Its a rare skill that someone is able to tie together complex geopolitics and history into a presentable, entertaining matter that even the layman can understand and follow.
I thoroughly recommend Caspian Report for his videos on geopolitics as well, although you may very well have heard of him as he's fairly popular on YouTube.
Yet Russia still has Crimea and eastern Ukraine is still fighting the Russian Army. Poland has every reason to be concerned.
Let's also not forget about the heavily-militarized Russian land that actually borders Poland directly and is the staging point for Russian missile dickwaving in the region.
Nah poland is fine. They're neighbors and good friends with a country known for kicking Russian ass and steamrolling the continent when it throws a temper tantrum.
