Years ago, in 2008, a buddy of mine told me about this weird game he enjoyed called Garry's Mod. I was 11 years old at the time, so I tried the game out in a LAN center. I had the time of my life goofing off like a moron with my best friend. We were playing Sandbox on cs_militia and we had no idea what we were doing, but I was hooked. I came home and begged my parents to let me buy a copy of the game. For 15 bucks of my own money, I purchased Garry's Mod.
I played the game religiously for years. I fell in and out of different DarkRP servers before landing in a very close-knit community called Dead Man's Gaming. For three years I played with my newfound brothers and sisters in all sorts of games. Some of the friendships I made in that community have lasted me well over seven years.
Rewinding a bit, nine years ago I was tired of feeling so helpless in my favorite game. I had to rely entirely upon the content that others had created and released for free on garrysmod.org. I decided one night that I would sit down and learn how to code. The next morning, I woke up early and pulled up the wiki. I opened up Darkcha0s' Simple Gamemode tutorial and began reading. I was meticulous. I typed every character of the code myself, never once using copy+paste. By the time I was finished, I thought I was the shit. I tried making a Hunger Games gamemode called Arena (which was shit), a sci-fi DarkRP edit (which was shit), and numerous other (shit) things.
Over time, I started to pick up on the nuances of Lua, Garry's Mod, and the Source engine. I made some pretty popular free content. The Portal Gun I reauthored has over a million subscribers right now. Eventually, as my college expenses placed me in a bit of credit debt, I started selling content on ScriptFodder. I didn't play Garry's Mod at all anymore, yet I was able to create some decently successful scripts. I pulled myself out of credit debt and I started paying off my student loans.
With all that said, I'm going to be too busy to work on GMod in the future because I just landed an amazing job at Anduril Industries. I plan to sell the rights to my scripts to a developer who can offer the proper support my customers deserve. If you think you're up to the task, please message me on GmodStore.
When I bought GMod for 15 dollars, I had no idea that I would play over 3,000 hours and I sure as hell had had no idea that it would lead to a career in software development. Hands down, the best 15 dollars I ever spent. So thank you, Facepunch Studios. Your video game has given my life purpose.
Good luck with your future man. You've been a huge inspiration to many developers here, including myself; I still recommend LuaBee to new coders for a great starting place. Thank you for all you've contributed to this community.
This is unexpected but I guess it should have been expected to happen eventually...
I'm going to miss seeing your work, Bobblehead. It's been a pleasure.
I wish you all luck in life and death.
We didnt know each other too good, but I saw some of your work.
It was decent.
