Russian journalist Arkady Babchenko was reportedly shot and killed in Kiev on Tuesday, May 29. According to fellow journalist Ayder Muzhdabaev, he was shot in the back while at home. A source told the website Obozrevatel.com that Babchenko died before paramedics could get him to the hospital. Ukrainian law enforcement later confirmed Babchenko's death. According to police, Babchenko's wife says she was in the bathroom when she heard what sounded like several loud claps. When she exited, she says she found her husband covered in blood. He apparently died in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. In a press statement, the Kiev police department said it believes Babchenko was killed as a reprisal for his work as a journalist. Babchenko fought in both of Russia’s post-Soviet wars in Chechnya. After leaving the armed forces in 2000, he started working as a war correspondent for Moskovsky Komsomolets and Zabytyi Polk. He later worked with many publications, including the newspaper Novaya Gazeta. Babchenko also founded the project “Journalists Without Middlemen,” and wrote several books about his experience in the military, winning multiple literary awards. Babchenko was a vocal critic of Russia’s intervention in eastern Ukraine, accusing Moscow of waging a war of aggression. In 2017, he left Russia and moved to Kiev, after receiving threats against his life. In Ukraine, he worked for the television network ATR. https://meduza.io/en/news/2018/05/29/russian-journalist-arkady-babchenko-is-reportedly-shot-and-killed-in-kiev Just over a year ago, he wrote this article about what it was like to be targeted by the Russian government and media and forced to flee his country over a facebook post. The 'unpatriotic' post on Facebook that meant I finally had to f.. He was also the author of "One Soldier's War" which is a great memoir of the Chechen wars.
Russia sure treating their veterans with respect.
Poor man killed himself with a shot to the back of the skull 4 times.
Crooked Putin and his emails
It's kinda funny how many of the people who won't shut up about that whole "Clinton hit list" nonsense also hold Putin in high esteem.
Waiting for the Russia excuse team of Facepunch
Can't wait to see how they pin the blame on Ukraine.
BREATHTAKINGLY bad fish
"The bones were extremely sharp!"
And apparently at supersonic velocity.
I can't believe that the Kiev Terrorist Military Junta managed to shoot down a poor terrified Russian citizen with a missile and then blames it on Russia. Obviously the Russian citizens in Ukraine need to be freed immediately.
survived through all the bullshit of the Russian army and its dedovshchina and the combat in Chechnya, to be 99% most likely killed by the government he fought a horrific war for. good shit
To be fair, he wasn't welcome in Kiev either (even beaten up by police forces, when he arrived in Donbass). And yeah, Putin tolerated him for 10 years, but decided to kill him just after he ran off to a country which doesn't like Russians? Surely he did it.
The idea would be to make others afraid of criticising him.
the first few times I could understand skeptical but this has been happening for way too long, way too many times for it to all just be a coincidence
Ok let's say Putin didn't kill him, do you think making him a non-person is ethically correct? Stripping him of his citizenship for something as small as reporting the truth? (Russia is indiscriminately bombing Aleppo, there is full evidence for this).
Surely he shot himself multiple times in the back of the head. Surely.
I just stumbled upon some posts and tweets this guy made. All of them are so anti-Russia he could give a run for neonazis moneys. Not trying to say his murder was justified, but the reason that guy got hit is pretty clear.
So, uhhh... he might be alive, according to Ukraine's Special Forces. https://varlamov.ru/2945667.html
Nobody is going to check onto record of how many journalists are detained and killed in Ukraine? Maybe it has less to do with him criticizing Putin from abroad and more with a fact that there is nobody capable of protecting freedom of speech in Ukraine. Heck even Amnesty noticed that The Ukrainian government is obliged to protect journalists and a..
inb4 "WHATABOUTISM"
Fugget about that, turns out dude is ALIVE and it's all a play wtf
Apparently he faked his own death to try to catch the people who had a hit on him
Now things are actually getting interesting and spicy.
'Dead' Kremlin critic Arkady Babchenko appears at news conferenc.. Hmm...
He didn't tell his wife either. What a ruse cruise
God damn the Russians are really dropping the ball with their assassinations lately.
WHAT THE FUCK
Shyamalan couldn't make this shit up, what the fuck?
Before ushering Babchenko into the room, Gritsak said investigators had identified a Ukrainian citizen who had been recruited and paid $40,000 by the Russian security service to organize and carry out the killing. The unidentified Ukrainian man in turn hired an acquaintance who had fought in the separatist war in eastern Ukraine as the gunman. Oh man this guy is double fucked now.
