It's so fucking cool that towns from Gen 4 were nearly in Gen 2.
...Speaking of Gen 2 Beta locations, you guys know how Sinjoh Ruins was added to HG/SS?
Well look at this.

Coincidence? I think NOT.
Also apparently in Kanto, the Gym Leader is Red.

holy shit it's Pi

it seems like the initial idea for the game was to have the entire map of japan as the setting, with kanto being a small shrunken version where the real life kanto region is
There are two types of people in this world
those who will catch them all, like me
and then there's everyone else, who isn't me
Nevermind, I don't want to catch them all any more

Leafeon was supposed to be 2nd gen! Those alternate starters looked pretty generic, I can see why they didn't go with them.
Some of these concepts were pretty interesting. Looks a lot like future pokemon were inspired by some of the ones that didn't make the cut. Looks like some were meant to have evolutions much earlier, like Tangela. Some pokemon had evolutions that never made it into the universe at all, like Qwilfish:

Many pokemon had baby forms that never made it - Growlithe, Ponyta, Grimer.
A lot of the beta sprites had a goofy design that was updated for release... One of the pokemon that stayed the same was Quagsire

Girafrig's concept

Looks like Slowbro's tail and Slowking's head was indeed supposed to be a separate pokemon:

named "Turban". lol.
Also, this god-forsaken thing:

I remember seeing screenshots ages ago of early Gold/Silver in Tips and Tricks mag (though they incorrectly used it with a blurb about Green/Red which had yet to be released internationally at the time of print). The map tilesets in that one were even more detailed than what is in this one (the buildings especially)
Shame this isn't that version because some of the buildings were actually pretty neat.

Super Gameboy Colors. Interesting that nonshiny Scizor was green

I have absolutely no idea
Looks like an early version of hitmontop
For some reason, this guy:

To me looks like he's taking fire for someone. Maybe something about his tilt and flaming back give me that feeling.

Super Saiyan Sparkle Dog.
They all tried their hardest
Looks like they wanted pokemon to keep the same color palette as they evolved. I'm rather interested that the concept for Hoppip's family looks like it has Sentret's tail. Also that thing after Delibird, a proto-Dedenne perhaps?
Aren't those just fan-coloured?
There's some really neat concepts and takeaways from this.
The most interesting thing to me, as Xonax pointed out, is how much the canned pieces seemed to manifest in Gen4.

ed...ward
It would seem they took the Valve strategy of never completely giving up on an idea, just shelving it for later.
IIRC The only shiny sprites in this demo were for pikachu and one other pokemon. The reddit thread was going crazy over that old unconfirmed "Pikablu" theory.
I just want to know what the fuck is up with that cat/Mew hybrid think next to Ho-oh

it gets worse
I'm sad that these didn't make the cut, they are left in a limbo of semi-legitimacy, being official designs, and therefore not fakemon, but also not being officially recognized anywhere in the series.
RIP derpy Gen 1.5 Pokemon :<
I've yet to see anyone like the legendary dogs in this, mostly because they are pretty silly. I...never liked the actual legendary dogs one bit, so I kind of prefer these ones for being so ridiculous.
Makes you wonder how many more of these scrapped designs there are.
Depends how far along in the design process you count. If you count absolutely every design that was ever beginning to be actualized on paper, probably high hundreds if not more.
