I was shocked when I found out about this research freeze through John Oliver. It should be absolutely criminal to freeze research funding to individual public health issues like this. There's no way you can't at least want more research, no matter where on the playing field you lie.
It's almost like they know the findings will be strictly negative, biased or not. The NRA is a pretty terrible organization by all accounts.
that baby in the carriage is straight-up brandishing a Thompson
The sense I get is that pro-gun folks didn't like the study 20 years ago (duh) and any further attempt to study guns will lead to the same biased methodology. So no research is done.
The Dickey amendment is pretty shitty but Mark Rosenberg's opinion on guns sure did take a 180 in recent years. in a Washington Postarticle, he was quoted as saying “We need to revolutionize the way we look at guns, like we did with cigarettes. Now it [sic] is dirty, deadlyand banned.” The same year Dr. Katherine Christoffel, head of the CDC funded Handgun Epidemic Lowering Plan, said in an interview with American Medical News"guns are a virus that must be eradicated...." In the same interview Rosenberg concurred with Christoffel, saying "...she’s not willing to be silent anymore. She’s asking for help.”
