So...looking at the article, and this right to try site, I understand the purpose of the law. What I don't really like is the intent to limit FDA's power and raise more concerns. I'm not too convinced this'll help but who knows.
I know it won't help
I wish gop politicians didn't hate and try to kill the institutions of the American government besides the ones that kill and imprison people.
I like to try and be somewhat optimistic, but I forget what timeline this is. Is it sad that, while reading the article, the first thought I had was "this is only gonna help rich fuckers"?
of course thats sad
its sad that you even have to ask if thats sad or not
If you want to be super cynical, the United States was founded by rich people to be their own playground.
This law is feel-good bullshit at best, and downright harmful at worst. Compassionate use programmes already allow patients who are not eligible for clinical trials to file requests for the drugs being investigated. This law simply cuts the FDA out of the process. Of course there are the usual arguments that overregulation by the FDA is stifling such programmes, and that cutting them out will increase the number of people who gain access to experimental therapies, but the FDA already approves over 99% of all compassionate use requests. This law doesn't even compel drug companies to grant those requests, so I really don't know what the hell Ron Johnson is trying to achieve here.
If you want to be cynical and also completely ignore the actual history of the country, sure.
The Founding Fathers were pretty rich (adjusted for inflation Washington was the richest president before Trump). It could be interpreted as rich people starting a rebellion against other rich people in
England, who became independent because rich people in Europe also didn't like England.
I want to think the Founding Fathers' intentions were better than that, hence why I said super cynical, just really fucking cynical.
Can we all just agree to gut the ATF instead?
Besides the ones they profit from**
It's just more heinous that profit comes before all else when human life is involved.
Only after all new and existing gun owners go through a thorough and extensive mental health screening, routine background checks, and a thorough and difficult firearms safety and handling course.
The obvious consequence I can see to these new laws is to allow unscrupulous charlatans to basically run quick Phase I trials on useles things to show safety and then trick the most vulnerable into buying "experimental" treatments (with the help of equally shady doctors). And unless the laws changed before being signed in them the patients also waived any protections or legal remedies if the treatment went awry, something that was in place previously with the compassionate use system.
I get the meme you're trying to make, but in all honesty, the ATF does shit all to actually prevent any of the things you just listed prevent. It's one of the most prolific examples of bureaucratic waste and inefficiencies ever.
They also have a nasty habit of smuggling thousands of guns too the cartels via California and Arizona.
Also their name should be a conveniance store, not a government agency.
The ATF was also busted running a lucrative cigarette smuggling operation to fund a black budget, which was busted by none other than the cigarette company that owned the warehouse.
The FDA kills millions by refusing to allow the importation of live saving drugs from nations like Canada.
Do you have actual numbers on the number of people who died as a result of being unable to afford medication?
