It's about 4 hours old, but if you folks across the ocean are using Visa and suddenly getting declined, this'll explain it
On a Friday too, yowch
Huh, so that's why it took 5 attempts to book my train ticket, kept thinking I'd put in the card number incorrectly.
Has a visa employee spoken out online about what can cause something like this?
fail across UK and Europe
Taking Brexit a bit too far
Ah, I was wondering why the self serve was giving me grief.
Went to the supermarket after work today and it was fucking chaos.
Boy am I lucky my bank switched to Mastercard recently :v
Well bollocks, I was away to head out to fill the car up but I have a visa card... Hope this has unfucked itself before I have to leave for work in the wee hours.
I had a mini-heart attack when my card declined, for a moment I thought I'd been skimmed and my account drained.
Explains the massive queue at the servo, they were having massive card issues after about 5 or 6 people filled up and couldn't pay, glad I had mastercard
Some folks with Mastercard and Amex are being affected as well (if routed through Visa network), so don't breathe just yet.

As far as I know, I've only seen the VisaNewsEurope account sent something out...around 9 AM yankee time. Been several hours since:

Some are saying its an API misconfiguration, but it's up in the air right now.
Don't they use Azure or a similar cloud service? Should be pretty reliable infrastructure wise
My car was being serviced earlier and as I heard about issues before it was always in the back of my mind about getting declined when paying.
I got the call saying its ready for them to drop off and they wanted payment before arranging delivery (can't blame them, but you see where this is going). Needless to say both visa cards were 'declined' over the multiple tries and I wondered if they would hold the car hostage until it was paid, even if it was out of my control. I tried to explain to the person that there's an issue with visa but I'm sure he thought it was just me, saying things like noone else all day has had an issue...
They don't even allow cash so in theory my car would have probably been held until monday. Thankfully they made an exception with the cash and it was sorted but it could have been a really shitty situation.
oh well... didnt affect my bitcoin payments
Repeat after me: read-only Friday.
I bet someone tried to make a change to the network.
Just noticed this thread, yeah it fucked up where I work pretty badly, we handle shoe orders and right as I was finishing my shift, the entire thing went down.
Everyone was shifting to doing manual orders for the rest of the night, god help those fuckers who had to do it, we go through over 23k of orders alone when the US lines open and the UK lines ran till 10pm.
Also our phone lines kept going down constantly due to talktalk being fucking useless, this friday has just been hell in general.
This happened JUST after I bought some new blankets. It was being really slow when I was using my card and the cashier commented on it having been a slow piece of shit the entire day.
Then as I went home and closed my door, my WhatsApp-groups exploded with people falling apart in stores with carts full of groceries because they didn't have a single penny on them and even the ATMs didn't work.
shutting down card payments seems like an excellent cyberattack vector.
Yes it's a good job my local sainsburys accepted bitcoin for my tea and cat foot or else I would have been left without
dude you got problems if you're buying cat feet
Basically the TSB situation, except that's because of a lack of IT support
Well how else am I supposed to complete my botched home taxidermy?
The world could be on fire and you crypto nerds would still be preaching about how superior your bitcoin is lol
Glad I switched to Monzo recently with their (awesome colour) MasterCards then.
If you're still using a legacy bank it might be worth having a look at some other options like Monzo/Starling/Revolut. Easy to switch too with the Current Switch Guarantee scheme that most banks support nowadays.
I'd imagine this caused some real pain on the M4 bridge toll. Most of the other tolls are either very quiet or tag-only (Dartpass) but the Severn is a regular victim of holiday congestion as it is normally - now what if all the card-only lanes are filled with panicking Visa users? Carnage...
This post is bothering me what is "yankee time" supposed to be
American time?
America stretches 4 time zones.
