So, while having infinitely respawning nodes, barrels, trees and animals is the best way to have the system be standard in Rust, I was wondering if it would be possible to implement a more low-key server where, as time goes on, less and less resources are available. That means nodes, trees and everything else will be more contested, and people will have to think of alternatives. I don't mean "Chop down a tree and it never comes back", but a more gradual decline in resources could naturally "Thin" an island, leading to the "Wipe".
This would mean an abundance of resources, especially raw ones, earlier into the wipe, but as time goes on you'd have to venture farther and search harder to find ores, wood, etc. This system would only be live due to the fact that Rust wipes servers, and I feel like it could be fun. A more extreme situation could see, say, people running out of wood on the islands, and trading other resources for it if they need it, or animals becoming scarce. (This would work best with some sort of system for natural resource replenishment, but that's a whole new bag).
Was just a thought I had, figured it might be fun to see everything become more hectic and rare as time goes on. Any opinions, or is it just a shite idea? Would love to know.
IMO I wouldn't play on said server but I can see more dedicated players loving that idea. Why wouldn't I? I can barely find animals in a 400% animal spawn rate server, just not my type you see? In any case I think you can already do it in a modded server, might take a little tweaking and coding but shouldn't be too hard.
I used to play on a Canadian Vanilla server where they would restore resources once every 24 hours, So you could make it difficult for players constructing a base if you harvested all the available material surrounding their base when they were offline,
Your idea is more extensive and would certainly lead to resource wars on a busy server,

Well I see it this way. It isn't an issue with the amount of resources, its the ease with which you can gather and transport them and the gathering time.
At this point in time I can chop and carry enough timber for around 3 houses in real life in less than an hour. If I have a chainsaw it shortens the time immensly.
So how would making it harder and more difficult to gather/transport effect the game?
I would like to think it would would put an emphisis back on farming.
