Our Newest Partnership > News | Bungie.net
At Bungie, our purpose is to build worlds that inspire friendship. For over twenty-five years, through Marathon, Myth, Oni, Halo, and Destiny, we’ve created fantastic places where players have gathered to become heroes. Now, our long-term goal is to become an entertainment company that sustains many worlds simultaneously – Destiny and new worlds to come.
Today, we’re excited to announce that we’ve entered into a new partnership with NetEase to help us explore new directions. With their industry expertise, they’ll empower us to build new worlds and invite players, new and old, to join us there. They’ll help us support separate teams inside Bungie to bring our newest ambitions to life.
If you’re a player of Destiny, this news won’t impact the hobby you’ve come to know. Destiny is an experience that will grow for many years to come. We’ll continue to work with our partners at Activision to foster this global community and turn new players from all over the world into Guardians. Our commitment to that world is not diminished by this announcement. We have exciting plans for the future of the Destiny franchise, and you’ll learn more about the next steps we’ll take together in the weeks to come.
For now, we’re grateful for the opportunity to welcome NetEase to the family. We have a bold vision to explore with them, but that is all a conversation for another time.

Lol, who wants to bet Destiny 3 isn't even developed by Bungie? So much for the ten year plan.
I hope it's worse than Destiny 2 was so people stop frothing at the mouth every time they ask me why I don't play it and I tell them because I thought it was the product of taking a sloppy shit and letting it ferment in an open dumpster on a hot summer day.

Netease is responsible for china launches of Blizzard games
i assume not only is it for the new ip but also to provide mainland china support
Yeah, how many times has Bungie broken their promises already? Besides, after all the turmoil they've faced ever since they made their proverbial deal with the devil (the one and only Activison), I wouldn't be surprised at all if Bungie wants to movie on from Destiny.
It's worth nothing that in the comment chain below the tweet in the op Jason Schrireier is speculating the exact same thing:

A new IP will definitely be interesting, and will hopefully be a way for Bungie to wash the troubling reputation of Destiny off of their hands if they get it right.
And no, Bungie is not getting a new publisher. Seeing as NetEase also publishes Blizzard's games in China, this is just a very large investment and nothing else.
Pretty sure Bungie has to fulfill their end of their agreement with Activision before they can go seeking other publishers.
Well it's not like Bungie hasn't just royally fucked up time and time again with Destiny, so who cares I guess
Can't say I blame Bungie for wanting out. Destiny has been a complete shitshow behind the scenes and I'm not sure if Activision taking over the IP would be better or worse than what's currently happening.
Is Jason Jones even at Bungie anymore? Haven’t heard of him since the Destiny 1 launch and the fiasco around Marty getting canned.
I wish Destiny 1 turned out the way it should have. Marty O’Donnell and Joe Staten both had incredible work and it was a shame they got thrown aside by Activision.
They got thrown aside by Jason Jones, whom has been for more dictatorial than activision ever thought about being.
Yeah honestly I'm pretty sure Jason Jones is the problem at Bungie from what I know.
He'd been trying to get Destiny greenlit by a publisher since before Halo came out and by the time he was free of Halo it became an unhealthy-obsession Pet Project he wanted to force-through at any cost after a decade+ of being turned-down. And it's pretty clear that every publisher (Microsoft included) that turned it down ended up being in the right on this. Bungie simply lacks the pedigree for what Destiny's genre demands of a studio.
But that's not the worst of it.
Jason Jones lured Marcus Lehto back to Bungie on the promise that he'd let him work on his own off-brand Spiritual Successor to Halo (Think Dark Souls relative to Demon's Souls) and then almost immediately after Pre-Prod on that project began, Jason Jones had it shitcanned and declared All Hands on Deck for Destiny. So naturally of course Lehto and his team immediately left Bungie once again, with Jason Jones alienating talent and burning bridges for the sake of his Pipedream Pet-Project.
Can't wait to see what V1 Interactive puts out now that at least some of the core 90's-Bungie talent is safely back under Take2's wing again like the good old days before Myth 2 and Oni fucked things up.
I'm not sure I'll ever forgive Bungie for the shit they pulled on Marty. MOTS was a damn masterpiece and I can't believe it nearly never got released.
Oh shiiiiit man. That reminds me.
Wonder if V1 Interactive will be able to reeeallly get the gang back together by picking up Marty and waking Alex Seropian from his iPhone-Exclusive Mobage slumber.
Yeah, but TBH he wasn't even really involved in what most people considered the best Halo titles (Halo 3, ODST, or Reach) basically no involved in the last two there.
Jamie was responsible for a lot of what made Halo feel like Halo, and he left around Destiny. Joseph also left around the Destiny launch, and as we all know Marty was forced out.
Bungie is a husk of it's former self, and is being led by the terrible corporation that is Activision, which has rotted its internal culture.
Really sad to see how Bungie has fallen.
im scared about this line
our long-term goal is to become an entertainment company
implying something more than just video games
I don't even care that much about Bungie anymore tbh, I just want some other (competent) studio to pick up Marathon.
Can you imagine if, say, Machine Games rebooted Marathon and gave it the same lore depth and classic gameplay pacing as the originals, just polished and smooth?
The language used in their statement is really weird, it's strange to hear a games company speak in such a manner, I know it's a business they just make it sound so...corporate.
According to at least one account it was Bungie, not Activision, who came up with the idea for Eververse. I think the leadership is corrupt. Sure would why they always pass off the PR job to members of the live team whenever Destiny 2 does something shitty.
