it's infuriating how little was improved after all this time. the money I was going to spend on this shit is going to Code Vein instead
It's basically worse case scenario: they basically implemented what dsfix did anyways and made graphical improvements without fixing most of the bugs or adding anything meaningful
Remasters are usually shit. Stop getting hyped up for them, they're the same game.
It wouldn't even be anywhere as bad if they just gave it out for free for people who already owned the original.
fucking dark souls 2 did that with Scholar of the First Sin, it's not like its a foreign concept to them
They didn't even fix the well known places where textures are missing And they added new bugs
How it should be done: Wind Waker HD Ocarina of Time 3D Last of Us Remastered Uncharted 1-3 remastered
Yeah, that's the point. If the original game is good, a remaster will be a good way to replay it with new and shiny graphics. That's the whole point of a remaster.
Should I still give Remastered a try if I never played DS? I know you have to jump through hoops to patch the original.
How it should be done: Yakuza Kiwami Fixed that for you.
That's a remake, not a remaster.
Kiwami is a proper remake though not a remaster.
Speaking of Yakuza at least, it was Japan only but Yakuza 1 & 2 HD were some top tier remasters. The games remained intact other than now being displayed in an HD resolution and some much appreciated QoL features like being able to access the item boxes on the save point phone booths. This was unlike Kiwami's actual remake with some retcons, gameplay and additional features carried over from 0 (which were also nice on its own, but it's definitely different from the original). On top of that Yakuza 1 HD had 2's more intuitive combat that flows better and doesn't lock you into one direction during consecutive attacks which was really nice and something to be really appreciated more on a remaster without changing anything from the core game but rather proper QoL stuff and fixing all the bugs leftover from the original release.
Of course. It's better than the original.
"That's the whole point" Somehow this detail doesn't happen enough for them to not be shit
Why did people buy PTDE in the first place if they knew it was a terribad port? That's what I don't understand. There's all this talk about not supporting devs by buying awful ports, yet tons of people did that because "dsfix fixes it"
but dark souls 2 actually did offer a free graphical upgrade for the original as well as adding an additional boss all for free https://i.imgur.com/DYuuAxA.png
You know what i'm surprised EA hasn't done that yet, let people get the best looking battlefield "£15 for 1024x768 or £49.99 for 1920x1080" or certain graphical features
It's so obvious to be simply a port to newer gen consoles that I am not sure why people are so hyped for it and then get angry. The PC release is pretty much a bonus so the PC gamers won't feel like they're left out. This remaster is for those who had played 2 and 3 or Bloodborne and are interested with the first game in the series, pretty much just like how people keep wanting the original Demon Souls on the PS4.
I do wish they'd offered this as a free upgrade to the owners of PTDE, it's not a massive enough change in the way the game works to justify a full price release and the discount while appreciated, probably should have been replaced with "FREE". A number of games have already done that after all (Darksiders: Warmastered was just given to anyone who owned Darksiders and it's about the same tier of remaster as DS: R). There's a few nice improvements in DS: R that do genuinely make it look better tbh. Proper resolution scaling for one, the UI and text looks right finally. Parallax occlusion mapping on most surfaces now makes things look pretty nice up close. Some of the new effects are pretty even if they are just the DS3 effects. The new lighting model isn't as bad as pre-release stuff was making it out to be either, but they do appear to have fucked the odd texture up here and there for the new lighting model. And of course actual 60 FPS support is lovely (give me 144 or give me death). Shame they didn't really bring any of the fixes for gameplay over from the later games. Backstab mechanics and such in DS: PTDE were fucking annoying if you weren't a regular PvP'er, and DS: R hasn't resolved that at all. Got to see a real life GiantDad the other night tho, that makes it all worth it.
The best thing about this remaster is the population it brought back to Dark Souls 1.
Hearing the bells near constantly is really weird. I got into DS: PTDE way too late to hear them outside of super organised community events. And seeing the casting buff circles from time to time is pretty neat.
I know, that's what I meant by "it's not a foreign concept to them".
Honestly, the worst thing about this is removing the original Dark Souls from Steam: Hundreds of user mods are now made worthless to new players. The general online population will suffer as you can now just use friend codes to join games so no need to risk joining randoms (which, for me at least, was part of the fun and added to the mystery and difficulty of the game). Graphics have been changed for the worse IMO, shading looks brighter now and changes the mood somewhat. Some of my many issues are subjective and I wouldn't care about these changes if users at least had a choice between versions, but I guess Namco-Bandai had to use this console re-release as an excuse to bump up the price on PC too. Anyone who wants to play the original legally is forced into this version, short of getting a last-gen console. I think that's pretty bad as far as preserving game history goes.
Tbh this isn't really a problem. If it's anything like the DS3 password implementation you're reasonably more likely to be invaded once you summon a password linked friend into your world. You can't actively avoid randoms when you're online. There's gotta be downsides, and when you're playing with a mate and almost certainly communicating with them, it's only fair you get more invasions. Even after multiple months since the launch of DS3 and friend who would summon me would be invaded on the dot every time the invasion cooldown reset. But when playing with randoms this never really happened.
I wasn't aware it increased invasion chances to that's something. Still, I liked how unfriendly the original felt - you had no friends to save you. I'd be lying if I didn't use the feature a bunch in DS3 and despite my wording my issue isn't the fact that it's there at all (it would be cool to have the option to play through the original game with pals!), it's the fact that everyone is forced to accept it whether they want to or not. It probably seems petty on my end but I felt it helped the atmosphere that the lack of that feature brought with it, new players who may have felt the same aren't allowed to have that type of experience.
I would call it an improvement over the original game, if only a slight one. The biggest 'trash' thing is the community. I've heard a lot about backstab fishing competitive players- why not just NOT exploit that mechanic and play the fun way?- or hackers doing that whole cursed/armour breaking/egg thing. I was having myself a damn fun time playing the game until I heard all this stuff pop up, and now I'm back to just playing DS3.
Boy, I wish I knew it was a terrible port when I bought it. People were too busy collectively fellating the Dark Soul series, particular DS1 and DS3, at the time I bought it. I didn't hear a single bad thing about Prepare to Die Edition when I bought it. I still regret that decision to this day.
The thing is that DS1 with DSFix was still a good game, even if technically troubled. And in spite of this, From got their ports of DS2 and 3 a lot more in gear by actually gaining experience in PC portjobs and/or issuing the ports to competent people. The people gave the devs their trust, and the devs, while still japanese devs focused on making games for consoles, tried to reciprocate. DS Remastered only really adding resolution options without even remotely acknowledging the advancements, improvements and other factors the later ports added pretty much shows that this one was lazy. And considering everything is still tied to framerate, the game actually going into slow-motion if you cap it at what used to be the original version's FPS limit of 30, among all the additional bugs or unfixed bugs, and countless other problems, it honestly may even go beyond lazy. They really should've just let the remaster team do what they wanted in terms of tweaks and gameplay changes, so the remaster could've stood out on its own. Instead they tried to make it appeal to the people who already have the damn game and still did random weird tweaks for seemingly no cohesive reason, but left it as a mess while poorly implementing their new changes.
