Anyone heard of S mode turning on by itself and being stuck on?

Someone I know alleges that their Windows was in S mode just suddenly one day, and the option to turn it off in App Store just gives out a "page cannot be displayed" error.
Sounds pretty fantastical to me but maybe someone of you knows something?
