• Why is game performace worse and worse since update for me?

I need a serious reply from someone who either knows much about game development or hardware in general. Can you please explain to me, why each first week after any Rust update the game runs perfectly smooth to me, but the second and other weeks it slowly turns to be worse and worse until it's almost unplayable? I'm not even able to play on a Solo server, because the way this game handles base loading is so terrible that there's no way I'm able to play on it. The next thing, does Rust even know the term "Release memory"? The RAM and VRAM usage is never dropping down since the game starts. It's only raising up, which results in the situation when I have to restart the game each 30 mins. I've played Rust for 2 years now, and I've never had to do this. The optimization was never so bad as now. Is this really necessary? Do I need really need the best gaming PC, just to be able to play this game? I know there are some great optimizations planned for the next update, but will it be different then it was until now? The first week always the best, and then returning to the old state, and starting to be even worse? I'd really appreciate if someone who knows much about this stuff would reply to me. I'd at least like to know why is this happening, or if there's anything I can do about it. Thank you very much. Btw here's my specs: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3470 CPU @ 3.20GHz 8GB RAM DDR3 (665.1 MHz) NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 Ti (2GB VRAM)
Probably because you only have 8GB of memory and your graphics card has 2GB of virtual memory. I had issues running the game too, until I got 16GB of RAM. It seems to differ between person, but Rust has always used 6-8GB for me. Try putting "perf 3" (I forgot the exact command) to monitor memory usage as you play. Also, your entire computer is sorely out of date. Try closing an extra applications such as web browsers and etc while playing Rust, because you're going to be using a massive amount of memory. Your system might take 200-300MB up, and then if Rust takes around 7GB, you don't have a whole lot of cached or free memory left. TBH, Rust basically needs 16GB of RAM to play decently in any way. You're just hurting yourself without it.
I agree with TNC. Its well worth upgrading your memory and graphics card. If you are still using DDR3 it is time for Santa Clause to bring you a new PC for Christmas. I found that VRam just doesnt cut it. I also find that after the first week there are many more strutures on a server cluttering things up so things start to slow up. Sorry for the bad news
My computer had 16gb of ram in 2009, nearly a decade ago. Is 16gb in 2018 so much to ask for? As more features come out it's generally going to add more memory requirements (RAM and VRAM) and will be optimised later. Easiest to get the feature set laid out then do optimisations and make lower end systems work better later when they work out whats necessary. It probably gets worse weeks after a patch due to the larger number of things to load on the map/more skinned items etc, when people build bigger and find more items, taking more memory. Could also be worth checking your cpu/gpu temps to make sure you're not experiencing thermal throttling. Something which can happen on any system as thermal paste can go bad over time. Thermal paste is cheap and good maintenance thing to do on any machine. There's a good guide on youtube with some tweaks and tips to get better performance. Until the game is complete a lot of these things will have to be done manually. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W9CotUmAUyM
I agree , I am using 32GB @ 1333mhz with a 4GB graphics card, You can still get performance issues but no so many as you would with 8GB ram.
8GB RAM? Thats a bit, let's say "not the presence" Go for 16GB Aswell you Graphicscard is older than mine I thought i have a potato-pc ^^ i am using a GTX 760 4GB and it's a way too weak for a nice gameplay in RUST. I know it's not everyones wish to upgrade his pc whith so much money you need for. But you need to upgrade it and prepare for future. You can get cheap used parts aswell, just check their functianality before buying them
Thank you, I will try Right now I'm saving up for a new graphics card. I know I'd really need better RAM as well, but university student's life isn't really good friends with money making, at least in our country, so I can upgrade my pc really slowly :l As I mentioned, it's not as easy to make such money for spare while studying at university. This shouldn't be a problem, because I usually switch servers to fresh wipes after each week or even more frequently, so there isn't as much buildings to load as on other servers that wipe monthly. Thank you, I will check it and try to do something about it. I have already tried this guide, it has helped only a bit. Yea it must be a heaven to play this game with such big RAM. I'll definetely go for a system upgrade, but right now I'm saving for some graphics and RAM and it still goes slowly. But if this will continue, I won't even be able to play this game until I upgrade everything, which makes me sad. Thanks everyone for your answers, at least I know now what would be the best to upgrade and why is this happening. Thank you very much
Try typing mesh.quality 0 in console, it should increase fps.
I checked withe some of my expat friends and they said this place has good prices. I hope its of some use to you. Grial Pc Shop Vratislavova 12 Prague 2 12000 +420 777 014 071
Are you sure it's the right adress and shop name? I can't find anything like that in Prague
Yes. need a new computer. I think that you need more than 3.2 hgz is the minimum. just need vram 3gb and more. Well, the system itself. ram and hard disks. because bandwidth reduces. in the game, a powerful video card is very important. Processor is not very demanding. that all this flew. we need new modern technologies. gland. to avoid brakes.
I honestly think it's absurd to need 16GB to run any competitive game smoothly. Not everyone can buy 16 gigas out of nowhere. Sure it isn't that expensive but still a nuisance to say: "I need more ram to play a single game smoothly" imo just does't add up
It isn't absurd, that on 8 gb of ram, the game uses almost the same as your OS (windows) Windows uses 3-4 gb ram when you have 8gb total, the spare 4gb is just enough to run the game, but can get you some trouble rendering if the other hardware is running on the max. I recently upgraded my cpu, mobo and ram, now with 16gb ram, windows only uses 4-8 gb and the spare ram is more than enough to do everything else.
Its also an internet cafe. I hope it hasnt closed :/
I really don't care about the technicalities behind the hardware and whatnot, because when it comes to what you said I agree completely, but what I meant was: you shouldn't need good hardware to compete against others, especially in a game like rust where everyone wants a piece of your butt every time you're not looking, or because your fps is dropping at a bad time.
I'm really trying to find it but there is nothing like that for some reason xd
you don't need good hardware to "compete" towards others, if you have older hardware you just have to think about possibilities instead of problems, that in the first place takes away a lot of butthurt. For example: There is no point of searching fights and pvp if you only get 30fps, in that case you have to live in the shadows to survive.
I'd be glad for constant 30fps during combat xd But the thing is it was all running good, until the last update
Ok two things, your graphics card is a bit low, and the core processor is also slow (i5), if you have a pc, get an ssd, if you use a gaming laptop, get an upgrade. another thing to do is to get a better graphics card (i myself have a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980, and I'm somewhat happy with what I got. I get a couple frame drops every once in a while, but other than that my game is 99% smooth. Getting anything above 800 will be an amazingly big difference from a 750.
I must agree, my rig is flying on any other high graphics intensive games, for Months Rust played great even with the new trees, and sun shafts, now the last couple weeks its getting hiccups loss of 25-35 fps while looking at the same object or area! It seems like the coding is not streamlined or something.
The problem with rust is that things only load when you look at it, so you won't be able to have a smooth game, as you are constantly looking at things like bases, that might be past your draw distance, yet still load in.
That wasn't a problem a month ago?
