• Homeowner shoots, kills 2 armed burglars

The homeowner, who asked not to be identified for his safety, said when he arrived home, the men were already inside. "I see my house being ransacked and the dog was still going hysterical in the cage," he said. "When he saw me he notified the other individual that was with him, 'hey, they are here.'" That's the moment he said when the suspected burglars pulled out guns, but he was able to get to a hall closet to get his. "I had my own personal AK-47," he said. ... He said he did regret the loss of life, but "it was either me or them." MPD said the man responsible for the shootings was detained but later released. The District Attorney General's office determined that no charges will be filed at this time. The homeowner gave MPD his home surveillance system to back up his story that the shootings were in self defense. Homeowner shoots, kills 2 burglars with AK
Was it though?
Probably, since they were brandishing guns as well?
I would assume so, based on these: That's the moment he said when the suspected burglars pulled out guns, but he was able to get to a hall closet to get his. The homeowner gave MPD his home surveillance system to back up his story that the shootings were in self defense.
Yes
I get that you are anti-gun but are you sure this is the hill you want to die on.
If you're gonna break into a house you should do so with the expectation that you could die. Their death is their fault.
i mean what's he gonna do politely ask them to surrender when they've got guns, clearly intent on fighting their way out of that situation? stand outside after calling the police while the criminals politely stand there waiting to be detained? seems unlikely to me.
Ah, missed that. Yep that makes sense then
what kind of burglar carries a gun, isn't that more of robbing someone?
Consider reading articles before posting epic hot take zingers hm?
The kind prepared to kill anyone in their path. Luckily for the homeowner, it happened the other way around.
I assume with how many guns there are in America, most robbers carry one so if they do rob the house of a gunowner, they have a chance to shoot them first.
Sounds more like he got called on his bias and he's making an excuse
I'll admit that I find America's fascination with guns and it's laws to keep them to be a bit disturbing But even I cannot find a problem with the way this was handled, the man seemingly did everything by the book and should be commended for his actions. My only concern is that I thought you guys had rules against assault rifles, isn't an AK47 just that?
It's likely a semi-auto rifle. The only way it'd be full auto is either via faux-auto like binary triggers/bump stocks, or if this guy was loaded with cash. Pre-86/Industry NFA sample AKs series are absurdly rare. Just to give you an idea, a converted "AKS" will run you $30,000.
an actual ak-47 is, a semi-auto ak-pattern weapon isn't for the record this is how about 95% of firearm incidents go down, at least the ones where the police were actually called (few people report "someone tried to rob me so I pulled out my gun and they ran off" to the police)
Generally in the US, fully-automatic firearms are prohibited, or in some states so difficult to get they are effectively banned. Guns for the civilian market are manufactured to be semi-automatic only, or imported guns irreversibly modified such that they cannot be made full-auto again. "Assault rifle" in the common parlance of a full-length rifle (short barrelled rifles or carbines are generally prohibited) with a pistol grip, detachable magazine and a certain look about them is more an aesthetic distinction nowadays than anything real in terms of effectiveness. Well, maybe one could make an argument about detachable magazines, but that's perhaps for another time.
Semi-autos are fine. I'm sure it's odd believing he took out two armed idiots in an inside area with a semi-auto, but having shot one before, the recoil really isn't that bad.
So there are a few options here. 1.) It wasn't actually an AK-47, and was instead a semi-automatic variant. Which would make it legal. This is the most probable. 2.) Automatic weapons registered before 1986 are still allowed to be owned by private individuals with the appropriate federal background check and tax stamp. These guns are dwindling in supply though and usually cost tens of thousands of dollars. 3.) Firearm dealers can purchase automatic weapons under certain circumstances. 4.) An actual original AK-47 would be more than 50 years old, which would make the weapon a curio & relic legally in the US, which would then exempt it from many of the restrictions that are in place
Thanks for the detailed answers everybody I learnt something today. hoping this doesn't turn into a 40 page debate on gun laws because of it tho
It's a thread involving guns, it was destined to go that way regardless of your post. Just get a bucket of popcorn and watch the show while us green plebs herd cats.
It's a shining city on a hill because of all the rifle fire.
I'm not pro-gun, but if some asshole breaks into your house with a firearm and intent to use it, I feel you have every right to kill him before he kills you. It's been the way of the land since the dawn of life.
a 40 page debate on whether or not the Vickers is applicable as a modern MG would be preferable
He clearly should have pepper sprayed them in the knees
I live right next door to campus security in really upscale neighborhood. Both my room mate and myself own guns. After I moved in here I practiced clearing the entire house in the event of something happening. He did the same. That being said, I don't want to shoot someone. But, if I were in his situation I would've done the same thing without a second thought, and gone to therapy for it later That's why my pistol sits on my desk where I'm at 99.9% of the time I'm at the house. Although now that I think about it... maybe I shouldn't have noise canceling headphones. Dudes could be in here right now robbing the place and I wouldn't know.
In the event that two armed burglars are in your home I don't know what could save you but a semi automatic rifle. This is the nightmare scenario and thankfully the homeowner was prepared.
