Holy fuck! 90 minutes!
man you can tell these people are extremely proud and happy, especially Todd. Like, dang, 20 plus years working in the same place and still not tired of it?
i've always admired the amount of work that goes into bethesda's games, and while i'm not a huge fan of fallout 4, i can definitely appreciate the risks they took with making it. the fact that they're making the games they want to play and not the games their "core fans" want to play is pretty admirable, because while the end product will definitely disappoint a lot of people who are expecting a more hardcore rpg experience, you can guarantee the end product is 100% a passion project and not something that's been pumped out just to make a specific subset of people happy. with that said, i really want a new elder scrolls title. unfortunately it'll still be quite a while until it comes, but hopefully by then, they'll have something huge to show for it.
Despite the shit people like to throw at Todd, he is one of my idols when it comes to game development, right up alongside Ken Levine. He has passion, he has vision, he has drive - and most importantly, he gets to put all of that together into creating the games he wants to create.
For some. Fallout isn't universally loved at BGS.
Why does the shotgun have lever action animations? Did they just leave in a bug in the gameplay footage?
"in fact at one stage they had asked Obsidian to remove a line in New Vegas about San Francisco being totally wiped off the map, they wanted the Bay Area to at least be an option for future games" What? San Francisco is in Fallout 2, and Kellog's memories show him there working for the Shi. Also that cut magic mutant quest could have been Psykers instead.
I'm sure that applies to all game studios. One of the guys they talk to at the start of the video seems like he isn't too into fantasy games but he's been working there for over a decade.
I loved that little segment about the gary vault
Today always seemed like a bland corporate hack so seeing that he has real passion was pretty cool. Not that I'll ever believe Bethesda's ridiculous promises but hey, at least there is some heart behind their stuff
His over-promises makes more sense to me now. Not that they're a good thing, but it's one way that somebody passionate about something expresses it. By bragging and showing off everything he envisions it as being, whether or not it actually makes it there. Sean Murray is another infamous example of passion leading to... poor marketing/PR.
Murray and Molyneux are in a whole different league than Todd Howard. I really think people who get pissy about him have no idea what actual disappointment is. I know, i know. Being a gatekeeping prick. But seriously, i get he's passionate, he says a lot of shit but what most people read as lies, i just read as standard industry marketing-speak.. and it's actually fairly restrained compared to Ubisoft, EA, Activision and so on. Todd Howard doesn't even remotely register on my bullshit meter and i think anyone with a semi-functional Marketing fluff filter (which any experienced gamer should have by now) would agree.
For everything that Fallout 4 lacked in the story and quest department, it made up for in the visuals and gameplay, and that really shows here. Seeing even Skyrim footage beside Fallout 4 gameplay is virtually night and day, and it makes me pretty excited to see what they pull off from here on out, in both the Fallout games and Elder Scrolls games.
Fallout 4 does look good, every screenshot could be a loading screen for the original games.
I feel like he doesn't quite deserves the flack he gets. His problem is overhyping things, turning fetch quests into "INFINITE QUESTS" and other kinds of things. Despite that, he and everyone else are clearly very passionate about their work, and try to do things as best as possible.
This makes me want to play Oblivion again
I really hope Fallout 76 is the "third time is the charm" for their Fallout games. Don't get me wrong, I love Fallout 3 and I love Fallout 4 even more. But from what it sounds like, the games could have been so much more. Watching this gave me some insight on things I wouldn't have imagined. I was surprised to hear Fallout 4's settlement system was something that was almost on the chopping board, from what I remember in pre-release, it seemed like such an integral feature for the game that it was always important. When I played it, it worked, but it definitely had its flaws and it always seemed like the developers could really made it spectacular if they worked more on the right elements. It sounds like Bethesda is still trying to learn what works best for themselves whenever they make a Fallout game, and if the rumors are true that the next game will have a larger focus on building, then I most certainly hope they've used what they learned from Fallout 4's settlement system and are able to succeed it in every way if it becomes a major focus. And on a more general level, I hope these past two games to find that perfect balance for an interesting product. I just hope it's still a Fallout game I can enjoy, the only way I can really see this just completely crash and burn is if it turns out to be a competitive multiplayer game like the most popular games out right now.
