• Man dies on Mount Everest during ASKfm cryptocurrency promotional stunt
    17 replies, posted
It was a stunt designed to play on one of cryptocurrencies most resilient memes: "to the moon" -- the idea that prices will skyrocket, leaving currency holders rich in the process. But it was a stunt that left one Sherpa presumed dead on Mount Everest. ASKfm, one of the world's top 10 social media networks, was about to release a brand new Initial Coin Offering (ICO), giving early investors the chance to pre-buy some of its cryptocurrency before its launch. To promote the ICO ASKfm sent four "crypto enthusiasts" on an expedition to Mount Everest. The plan: bury $50,000 worth of ASKT, ASKfm's cryptocurrency, in a nano ledger at the top of the mountain. https://www.cnet.com/news/man-dies-on-mount-everest-during-cryptocurrency-promotional-stunt/
Mount Everest isn't a fuckin joke.
Great, now they also littered a mountain with some dumb crypyto
can't wait for another 9gag rock with shitty memes on it plopped onto the side of it
That rock needs to get dug up and destroyed
Not only crypto, cryptomemes too.
So is the money still up there
At least a rock would be right at home on a mountain. They buried a chunk of metal and plastic, adding to the already ridiculous amount of garbage left on Mount Everest by climbers.
Not just the cryptomemes, but the cryptowomen and cryptochildren too. Banter aside, must feel pretty awful to die just for a meme currency's stunt. Surprised they first noticed he was gone only after they made it back, I would have thought you'd keep tabs on each other on such dangerous expeditions.
ICOs are the most retarded shit and skirt around all the regulations on the stock market that are there for very good reasons. Im mad the term even exists, its so stupid. Literally a pyramid scheme
title phrased it badly enough that everybody's completely missing the fact the crypto twit isn't the one who died, it was a sherpa who was left behind on the descent
Imagine dying for some dumb crypto meme.
I mean, it's not really dying for the meme. It's the sherpa's job to escort people up and down the mountain, the reason that they wanted to ascend doesn't really make it better or worse.
If your job is to regularly climb one of the most dangerous mountains in the world, it's no surprise if you end up dead one day.
Yeah but you're all not focusing on the real questions here. How much money have they successfully scammed from cryptards despite this bad publicity?
According to Internet Historian, it's soluble in vinegar. A few hundred litres would probably be enough to get rid of the carvings without digging it up first.
Seems like the stunt worked better than expected
While the stunt is pretty dumb in the first place, Sherpas (climbers) do die all the time because someone felt the need to climb a mountain - I guess you could say that's a purer goal, but it's not necessarily a "good" reason either. What should be derided is bad their handling of the situation - not mentioning that one of the Sherpas died, but it's not really surprising that they didn't considering what they're promoting.
