Lol trump just got played like a bitch. Hope the rest of them say the same.
Formerly the G8, now the G6 after getting rid of a couple tyrants who threaten the peaceful world order. I'm down with it.
I'm concerned if the US really gets booted out of international relations and treated as a pariah, that there will be severe civil unrest from the right.
"Oops."
Maybe they shouldn't have voted for a guy promising isolationist policies...
All the American exceptionalism and whatnot has been a mask to avoid facing the country's problems. In the past wartime unity may have done the job but not after Vietnam. I don't want to see the union
fractured again.
This is also Trump's attitude: If America isn't the clear victor over everyone else, #1 by a long stretch, then here comes a giant train of victimhood. If we can't be #1 we're victims of an unfair system.
Trump thinks everything that doesn't go his way is unfair. Criticism of him is unfair. Calling him out for objectively terrible decisions is unfair. Not letting him win over everyone else is unfair. This is the existential nightmare of the narcissist: Anything that does not make me look or feel better is an attack against me.
Do it. Call that fat bastard’s bluff. America has shown to be too chaotic to be anything but harmful to the international community. After 8 years time, we’ve shown to perform complete 180s on policies and allegiance; backstabbing and aggressively dismantling relationships. Our two party system is too volatile and any change in leadership drastically alters how we function.
Until we fix our shit, please ignore us.
Trump has singlehandedly undone ~70 years of American foreign policy and has made the U.S. untrustworthy to even our closest allies now. All in the time span of only two years. Who would ever want to make a deal with the U.S. when our next president could undo? That now includes complete disregard to international treaties.
I wouldn't blame them. When you get whiplash from a leadership change then no treaties, contracts, or alliance considerations could be trusted for more than 8 years.
Do it. I'm an American myself, but friggin' do it.
And remember that Mike Pence no-sale'd Trudeau on NAFTA negotiations because he insisted the US would not sign a deal unless NAFTA expired and was up for renegotiation in five years, and likely every five years.
Reminder that, including the ratification process in each nation, NAFTA took four years to negotiate, and it came on the heels of even more years of negotiating the US-Canada Free Trade Agreement and Canada fearing it would be cut out in a US-Mexico-only trading deal so we asked for developing talks to be a trilateral agreement so we didn't have to then negotiate another agreement between Canada and Mexico.
In other words, in Mike Pence's ideal world, as soon as the three nations finished agreeing to a NAFTA deal and send it off to their national governments to ratify, they should immediately start disagreeing and renegotiating so that when the agreement expires in five years they'll be ready to replace it. Trump campaigns for President this way, but when he does it it's just an excuse to hold rallies so he can feel like a little dictator, beloved and praised.
This is inevitable when a nation goes nationalistic in the age of globalism. Nobody wants to deal with that bullshit considering that we already had two world wars because of it in the past.
Well, they wanted isolationism, if anything this is what they want.
Do it. If only to watch Trump cry like a little girl about it.
If it comes out that Trump is in fact being blackmailed into doing Putin's bidding, people will look back on developments like this and wonder how in the hell it wasn't immediately obvious to everyone that Trump was knowingly and deliberately committing treason by imposing punitive tariffs on US allies and otherwise isolating and weakening the western powers.
just another cycle of the next democratic president repairing it and the right saying they're an apologist/globalist. the right doesn't mind international cooperation if it involves war, but peace? that's commie talk!
Personally I don't think it'll be a question of "how come no one saw it" but rather "how come no one capable of doing something about it didn't".
I feel like it's obvious at this point something is up and the fact that it's going to take hard undeniable evidence to make those in power go "hmm, maybe you're right. Maybe" is infuriating
There's something to be seriously worried about if America seriously withdraws from every single international obligation they have. What's gonna happen if you can't rely on the american dollar to be stable anymore? Are we gonna start valuing things in Krona?
Euros, I imagine.
Was macarons tree ever returned btw?
Those in power know, they just don't want to do anything about it because if that happens they'll forfeit the support of their base. Republicans would rather drag this country into the dirt and let the Russians destroy all of our diplomatic ties and alliances than lose politically, it's the same as Brexit.
I'd wager even their base knows, at least a good chunk of it. They've just been fed enough foreign propaganda bullshit to believe that Russia is some quirky underdog to be emulated and praised rather than a belligerent which poisons critics, invades their neighbors, and blows up apartment complexes full of civilians in false-flag operations. Russia is their new friend because they helped them win don't you see?! Next time you see some right-wing personality who's supposedly alll over the idea of free-speech praise Russia, ask them about what they think about Russia poisoning and murdering journalists, critics, and any politicians who threaten the internal order. The hypocrisy is blatant and it needs to be called out more often.
Current trends have made me realize just how false the right-wing claim to patriotism in this country is. They wave flags of the confederacy, the cause of the civil war and the one event in this country's history that threatened to completely destroy the unity of our nation. They conspire with foreign powers to win elections. They have rallies where people wave around fucking Nazi flags, our enemies in World War 2. They endorse the executive branch's attacks on the right to peaceful protest and free speech of citizens among our ranks. The image that comes to mind is a man getting piss-stains all over his pair of Stars-and-Stripes underpants.
They call it patriotism but it's actually nationalism.
Patriotism is being proud of your country for what it is and does. Nationalism is being proud of your country in spite of what it is and does.
I've always considered my dad's description of nationalism to be the most accurate.
"Patriotism is about loving your country. Nationalism is hating all countries but yours."
imo patriotism is just a more muted nationalism. There's no reason imo to hold your country in any higher esteem than any others just because it's yours
Stop doing this
Stop blaming Tinyhands for this
Tinyhands is doing a lot of damage and is a colossal shitheel, make no mistake, but never forget that the United States still has functional checks and balances to its power and the only reason he's able to cause as much damage as he does is because the people who are supposed to make sure those checks and balances work are a bunch of spineless, money grubbing shitheels
They could reign him in at any time. The branches of the United States government wield an immense amount of political clout, but they're staffed heavily with Republicans. Republicans are holding a great deal of power right now, and I think their absolute refusal to use even a little bit of it and their refusal to even do so much as speak about the problems of this administration until they';re safely out of the line of fire and on the path to retire is a thunderous cacophony. It's the loudest silence and most conspicuous inaction in recent US history and I deeply implore anyone and everyone to not let them scuttle out from under the shadow of their responsibility
Tinyhands is not the problem. He's a symptom. Tinyhands didn't just happen. The foundations for this administration have been years, even decades in the making, and make you no mistakes, it is very much deliberate. Tinyhands is everything the Republican political machine has been working for these last few decades. He's another Reagan. A brazenly corrupt, ego driven, loud mouthed, slack jawed, brainless idiot who plays so wonderfully to the cameras, polarizes the extremists, and draws the spotlight further and further away from the party itself
Even if you shift the blame onto the Republican party as whole, the message is still the same: in 4/8 years, another administration can come in and completely reverse everything that happened. So why ever deal with the U.S.?
Imagine if it escalated to the point that the US got kicked out of NATO before Turkey does.
Real patriotism is seeing the flaws in your country and doing your best to fix them, nationalists deny the existence of the problems or blame them on any other nation/ethnicity.
