They aren't going to listen, sadly
We're already beginning to..
doesn't half the world already either impose tax or ban plastic bags?
Speak for your own nation.
People don't care until it's too late.
WELL..
Tiny nation syndrome. Similar to tiny hands syndrome.
Aren't we already massively cutting back on plastic waste? Loads of countries are preventing single-use plastics already. That's a good start towards preventing plastic waste.
..not like Denmark is much better in this regard..
This is the right way to phrase it. I think climate change often suffers from a branding issue. It shouldn't be called "saving the planet". Earth will be fine. It'll bake us off of it like the flu and life will go on, albeit not the kind we're used to. It's humanity that needs to be saved.
it's not enough. Some of the biggest producers of plastic waste are just putting bandaids on the issue when it really needs gauze, antibiotics and stitches You'd be surprised by where it can come from, too. I work in an analytical laboratory that analyzes water, oil, and soil samples for things like heavy metals, pesticides, and other pollutants according to EPA standards and methods. Our work is conducted in the name of protecting the environment and protecting health. Yet we produce an inordinate amount of plastic waste that goes directly in the trash. No recycling happens here. My superiors claim it isn't cost effective and there's no incentive to do it. It is all short sighted and unfortunate and I wish it were different. If laws don't enforce it and ordinances don't incentivize it, business owners aren't going to do it.
I don't know why but in the UK at least there's this stubbornness that people don't want to pay 5p for the bags. Like if I forget to reuse my bag I'll carry that shit in my arms lol Seems like ti's working though, to some extent. Drop in plastic bags littering British seas linked to introducti..
You can't expect every business to completely cut all single-use plastics in a year time. We've managed to get rid of single-use bags in so little time. I expect more will follow.
Wow, I wish I could escape all the sins of humanity like you enlightened beings did. 5c is infinitely more than free. Thankfully, even just a 5c tax makes a difference.
I think part of the problem, on top of too many people flat-out not giving a fuck, is that there's a lack of recycling centers for this sort of stuff. I can't think of a single place here other than Wal-Mart or Lowe's that has a place for you to return plastic bags, and even then how many people do you think actually return all of their bags?
Feck gagmerica!
Not to mention the issue that a lot of american recycling centers don't even recycle a dang thing - they ship it all to china. Talk about passing the buck on environmental responsibility.
Frankly, not good enough
My folks were annoyed at first when MD did this several years ago, but they got used to it pretty fast as a practicality not environmentally. (I think I heard my mom say climate change is a big conspiracy UGH if really does think that) Those flimsy little plastic bags were annoying as hell to handle and extra annoying when they come apart and blow away.
The biggest culprits aren't Europe or US, but actually most SEA/Asia countries. There is simply zero education on recycling, so they dump it literally everywhere.
We are tinyer thatn Denmark and no its bullshit
Recycling is a part of the answer to the sustainability, but it isn’t the only answer. It would be better to just not produce that waste in the first place; to not produce single-use plastic especially in the first place. Eg a supermarket chain here in Australia is voluntarily phasing out single-use plastic bags in all of its stores by 1 July this year. But yes, we do need places to recycle whatever waste is still out there. There are so many small things which everyone can do here and there to prevent waste, but all of those small things together can make a big difference. Eg: Obviously buying - and actually using - reusable bags for shopping Stop buying packaged fruits and vegetables, especially if they are plastic packaged. Plastic wrapped bananas are fucking insane. If your supermarket offers plastic bags to place loose fruit, vegetables etc in, don’t use those either Instead of buying eg (plastic) bags of frozen diced onions, just buy the raw onions, dice them yourself, and place in freezer until you need them Use a drip filter machine (ideally with a washable, reusable filter) or percolator instead of a coffee pod machine - coffee pods are rarely recyclable, and even if they are, most people probably wouldn’t recycle them anyways Use bamboo toothbrushes instead of plastic toothbrushes
This shit drives me up the wall https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/246855/fe6afc4b-e4de-4793-8700-cb7ec70f5533/image.png Like what the hell, did they forget what banana peels do?
I mean, I can see a practical reason for keeping bananas sealed - bananas produce a gas called ethene as they ripen (along with certain other fruits such as kiwis) which causes other fruit to ripen faster, too, which would decrease the shelf-life of other fruits around them. But pretty much everything else is pure bullshit, yep.
I find it easier to bring a couple reusable bags than to use the plastic bags. The ones I use have a higher capacity than plastic bags so generally speaking I don't need more than 3 bags for a given trip. It helps because I live in uni housing and the walk from the parking garage to my dorm is a bit long, so bigger bags = less trips, which translates into the whole ordeal taking less time. Also helps that I've never had a reusable cloth bag tear open like plastic bags can sometimes.
In the bags. Empty bags take up basically zero space, so just shove them in my shopping basket or trolley. Lol
Well, I personally have hands. And sometimes, even pockets.
