“I do recognize this is probably a negotiating tactic … the administration is using, but in the meantime real families are being crushed by these tariffs right now,” said Doug Reigle of Regal Ware, a company with 200 employees in West Bend that makes cookware and small kitchen appliances
U.S. agriculture is bearing the brunt of the countermeasures already imposed by Mexico, equivalent to $2.62 billion of the targeted products. That includes $387 million in tariffs on U.S. cheese, according to a report from S&P Global Market Intelligence, which tracks global commerce.
Huh, so this is what Making America Great Again looks like.
All of these states ended up voting for Trump too.
Wasn't this deliberate? I recall hearing that other countries would put tariffs on US industries primarily based in red states.
I don't think other countries care enough to primarily target republican states?
They do.
The EU quickly enacted tariffs on products from Kentucky, Alabama and one other state that escapes me at the moment.
The reasoning being that Mitch McConnel, Paul Ryan, and one other name that escapes me at the moment would be directly targeted for re-election on the backs of these failing industries and the tariffs targeting them.
No no more whiskey, blue jeans, or Harley’s, and that’s what those states survive on. Targeting those states sends a direct message to the population “choose better representation”.
Is there any evidence that they're specifically targeting these state or are they targeting products that these states happen to produce?
Canada implemented tariffs on Bourbon (Kentucky), Orange juice (Florida), dairy products (Wisconsin), and a bunch of other products that originate primarily from red states. I noticed that the kinds of produce I see in my local grocery stores that are imported from, say, California, aren't included.
Trump's tariffs are stupid and the international community is applying retaliatory tariffs designed to hurt him by making things worse for States t that supported him. If he loses their support it might convince him to stop. Of course this is a man who throws tantrums whenever anyone tells him no, so it might not work.
RIP Louisiana who has all three.
Pretty much.

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes
Targeting red states with tariffs is pretty smart and definitely something more countries who trade with us should do.
I don't understand how Trump expects the US that they are going to win this. They don't have any allies that help them with their sanctions (meanwhile, the EU does), so what's the point?
But then again, it's Trump, so whatever.
[Deep, bellowing, laughter]
Maybe you shouldn't so carelessly vote against your own self interests you fucking goobers.
He doesn't know how trade deficits work. He thinks that we have been losing for decades so we can't lose anymore than we already are; the only way is up. He says as much on Twitter.
I'm nearly beaming at how good of an idea it is and can't believe it hasn't happened more in the past. While I'm not an expert it seems like a really good strategy to give the most complacent and careless red states a kick in the pants.

Or more specifically:
In retaliation, the European Union threatened to counter with tariffs of its own on products ranging from Florida oranges to cars produced in Michigan, with each tariff calculated to likewise hurt the President in a key marginal state.
The tariffs were lifted before the threats could be followed through but we're at a point where the sitting president is a complete moron and could potentially double down in response to the threat. So we might see a lot of red states end up with their economies imploding to varying degrees because of a angry, sentient carrot with a fragile ego.
can't wait for trump to respond in kind with similarly targeted political tariffs
Alternatively, given the stubborness I've observed from those sorts of people, they'll see it as some globalist conspiracy to tear them down or otherwise find some way to victimize themselves against some enemy.
I don't think anyone anywhere near the Trump regime is smart enough to carry out such a nuanced operation.
No, they are.
And then Trump'll contradict them on Twitter 4 hours later with untargeted spite tariffs and force realtime policy restructuring.
I don't think it is but I'm still not sure they actually are.
This actually makes sense though.
The citizens of these states chose Donald Trump to represent them.
Donald Trump caused a trade war.
The trade war should affect those who wanted Trump to represent them the most.
It's simple:
The trump administration started a trade war. They went out of their way to fuck with the economic ties between our nation and our allies, and as far as I and pretty much everyone else is concerned that gives them every right to fuck back.
I'm not someone who voted for Trump. I'm also not going to be involved directly with any of the industries that are getting tariffs. I'm quite glad that they're shitting on things like agriculture and the like instead of electronics. Thus, I'd say it's quite the good thing that I'm not being directly effected by policy changes that I wanted nothing to do with. I doubt that most people who support Trump would fault me for looking out for No. 1, considering that seems to be their entire philosophy anyways.
Literally everyone and their mother told them that this was going to happen, so there's a certain degree of schadenfreude in the whole affair.
I'd have liked that there was no trade war at all to start with, but considering the fact that we seem to be headed into one, well... I'm glad I'll be insulted from the worst of it.
Exactly.
Ideally, they wouldn't have voted for a moron who caused a trade war.
Ideally, we wouldn't have a trade war.
Unfortunately, we do have a trade war, and the EU is going to hit us with tariffs. The only question is, who is going to be hit?
And there's one group of people who actually deserves it.
It’s not a good thing in a vacuum, but in the context of Trump starting a trade war actions like this are what nations can and have responded with historically to enact change in specific districts that deal with the leading administration the most.
If Trump wants to have a trade war, then he’s going to have one. It’s just not as easy as anticipated for him.
I don't disagree with the basic concept you're peddling here. But let's not pretend that you're saying this for any other reason than because you support Trump, as shown by most of your other posts in this section. As others have said though, there is a difference between supporting all foreign influence and supporting foreign influence when Trump was moronic enough to try starting a trade war over dumbass bullshit.
Notice of intent to impose countermeasures action against the Un..
Here's the official list of Canadian trade tariffs, applied in retaliation to Trump's stupid trade-war moves, to go into effect July 1st until Trump ends his own aluminum and steel tariffs against Canada.
Would've been silly to expect anything different, really.
However, I'm sort of interested in knowing where Trump comes from on his rants about the US economy being an exploited cash cow to its allies. Did other countries have unfair tariffs on goods to begin with or is he actually being senile?
