Rosenstein has butted heads with House Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes for months over a subpoena for documents related to the Russia investigation, but the battle spilled out into public view Tuesday after Fox News reported staff on the committee felt "personally attacked" at a meeting with Rosenstein in January. Justice Department officials dispute the recounting of the closed-door meeting detailed in the story, and Rosenstein will now "request that the House General counsel conduct an internal investigation of these Congressional staffers' conduct" when he returns from a foreign trip this week, DOJ said.
Rosenstein 2020
He can be Mueller's running mate.
I dunno man. If he actually comes through I think the US needs him right where he is for the foreseeable future.
I know you're mostly joking here, but just to be super duper clear: this would be a terrible thing for the country.
I have a ton of respect for Mueller, and quite a bit for Rosenstein as well, but the last thing we should want out of them is for them to actually become politically involved, regardless of policy (although, to note: they are both lifelong Republicans. Honorable and dedicated civil servants with integrity out the wazoo, but that doesn't necessarily translate into good policy). The Department of Justice, and those serving it, are to be completely apolitical in operation. Were they to run for political office, even as Republicans, it would serve to socially and legally undermine their investigations into other political figures, including Trump himself. The case could be made that their investigations were political in nature and lay the groundwork for pardons, mistrials, dismissal of charges, etc. Basically, if they were to run for political office, it would paint them as exactly what Trump, the GOP, and the state propaganda network have been trying to convince people they are: political operators trying to push out an administration they don't like on purely partisan grounds.
Even though that narrative is complete bullshit, for the sake of the integrity and unassailability of their critically important investigations, they are going to have to walk on eggshells about how they conduct themselves.
Do it.
this is all fair and well meaning. but trump nominated one of the most partisan senators for AG and has run the place like a hyper partisan group weaponizing it against those that trump is displeased with
I agree completely. It's another one of the reasons that impeachment of Trump and criminal charges for every one of his co-conspirators is so critical to the future of our country.
Indeed, if either of these two show even a hint of political ambition of their own the far right will raise absolute hell. That being said, let's not forget that conspiracy theories and propaganda have precious little regard for reality, so it's hard to say just how much if any something like a Mueller campaign would actually impact the conspiracy theories about his investigation. Once this blows over it would be in the party's best interest to embrace Mueller and Rosenstein though, as it currently stands they're the two highest profile Republicans to not be complicite with or actively involved in treason, if the GOP doesn't steer away from Trump soon he's going to bring the whole party down with him.
