All the quotes and stories that appear to have been said by her or relate to her are fake. The hashtag appears to have been started as a joke by fans, but elements of it grew outside the hashtag and became memes in their own right. While the meme quietly continued for the past several months, it gained popularity again in June. I don't get the "joke" or the "irony."

These first few posts feel like they're personally shaming me because me and my friends used to edit each others social media posts to have extremely, over-the-top racist or just general rude and terrible comments and send them to each other. I mean, we were doing it to our good friends and not a little girl who is a relative stranger to us over the Internet with a mob of other strangers. But, y'know, basically the same thing.

I understand where you're coming from, I'm sure most people have inappropriate jokes shared between friends (or in my case, my brother and I). The problem here is that whatever the "inside joke" was has clearly gotten out of control and only paints Millie Bobbie Brown in a negative light without justification. Then the people hide behind "it's a joke" unwilling or unable to see the harm it causes.

It’s no the joke itself that is offensive. It’s the context that it’s within. You making jokes and editing your friends social media posts is fine. Honestly the Millie brown jokes would probably be funny to me out of the context of a real 14-year old girl being subjected to harassment. Its such a tender age for emotional instability, and on top of that she’s famous which makes her social life very complicated. This is an instance that could drive a young girl to suicide out of social shame. That is not okay.

Having an anonymous internet can definitely a blessing however sometimes we also have cases of gargantuan douchebaggery which is simultaneously bad for the person affected and also for the internet itself because it gives other gargantuan douchebags the justification to argue against the existence of anonymity. Infact I mildly suspect that this "meme" was concocted by people who are interested in drawing attention to ending anonymity. Then again, twitter is an extremely vulnerable platform to shit like this like this and it kind of needs more safeguards against malevolent bandwagoning.

these types of jokes are funny when they're about bernie sanders or anthony fantano, and in those contexts it's because they were falsely accused of racism/sexism/whatever so playing up a caricature of them as being violent homophobic racists is funny. this just seems completely random and i'm not quite sure what the joke is. it seems like it might've been an in-joke between a few people that the rest of twitter took and ran with
