Ace Combat is basically always an anime plot, but with semi-realistic setting like MGS.
They're a penal unit for the air force, so I would assume that they're pilots that disobeyed orders or did violated some protocol/law to get them sent there
we know that trigger is in there because he was the only survivor of his previous squadron who got wiped out (presumably because of something he did or was framed for), so it does seem that its less of a 'we took these drug dealers out of prison and gave them airplanes' and more of 'we gave these court martialed idiots airplanes and sent them on suicide missions'
And then the idiot crashed into the cliffs because he was using follow-cam while flying between cliffs like a moron.

I don't think it goes as far as infinity's '3D PRINTING!!!' but strangereal definitely has had reduced materiel cost as far back as the belkan war as gründer/south belka munitions had nearly-fully automated arms factoriea during the war

Ace combat is a franchise I've never actually played but most of what I've seen looks cool as fuck because it looks like Metal Gear but in jets.
AC5 will forever have the best storyline to me, I dunno I feel like this trailer made the story look bad.
If and when you ever do get around to them, always go for AC4, 5, and Zero as these have the best story of the series. 6 is good too but not as excellent as the first three, and also was a 360 exclusive. The rest can be safely skipped.

Five and Zero can be played easily enough on PCSX2, 4 still has some issues and need to be run in software mode.
The images can be found super easy since they're abandonware at this point.
the original japanese release of ac3 should not be skipped.

Yes, you HAVE to play AC3. There's a full translation patch out now: Project Nemo
Modern controls, good graphics (for ps1) and animated cutscenes done by the same studio that made Ghost in the Shell.
TBH no game has done that angle well in a long time
Ace combat 1 is still fun and the 3DS remake of 2 is fantastic. The fan translation of 3 is great and X is good too.
BTW if you hardcore AC fans can't wait any longer (like myself) check out Project Wingman.
imo the only skippable AC title is assault horizon. all the others are at least worth a play if you enjoy the gameplay and writing style. i really like 6 and feel it gets an unfair reputation. even INF's story mode was enjoyable, even if it was schizophrenic and ends on a cliffhanger that will never be resolved.
hopefully AC7 brings a breath of fresh air into the series because only the power of japanese whales in INF saved AC from the gutter forever
