An attempt to make upskirting a specific criminal offence in England and Wales has been blocked by one Conservative MP.
The government had given its support to a change in the law earlier.
But Sir Christopher Chope shouted "object" to the bill, leading to cries of "shame" from other MPs.
The campaign for the bill against upskirting - when photos are secretly taken under a skirt - was started by victim Gina Martin.
This fucking country
I honestly can't think of any reason to block this bill other than wanting to commit political suicide.
From the OP’s wording it sounded like it was still a crime regardless (which could’ve made this law a bit redundant), but apparently it isn’t at all according to the article. So yeah, this is actually pretty out there.
You just ahve to look at the long line of things he has blocked to see he's a fuckwit.
If you read his wikipedia, the other things hes blocked include:
Protecting poor countries from "vulture funds"
Debating the Hillsborough disaster before MPs pensions
Pardoning Alan Turing
Banning wild animals in circus performances
Making revenge evictions illegal
Restricting hospital parking charges for carers
He's honestly despicable.
A real life troll, why does he even have a seat this government is a fucking shambles
We know what Chope's favourite hobby is now then. Fancy outing yourself like that.
Lol guys a pillock
Being against pardoning Alan Turing is ridiculous! Alan Turing is one of the big reasons for allied shipping making it to Britain during WWII and it was the reason that the Russians were able to prepare for attacks on the Kursk salient, yet the British government treated him like an animal.
But but he did icky things with other men
She also said he told her that he "wasn't really sure" what upskirting was.
"Ups...kirt? No I don't know what this 'upsk-irt' is. No idea. I definitely have never visited technically-legal-so-enjoy-while-you-can-upskirts-dot-com. Nor do I pay them 49.95£ every month for their material."
Christopher Chope, eh? More like Christopher Chode!
...I'll leave now.
Shitpost long enough in politics and you can get anything. Only makes it worse that this tard got nominated twice.
Honestly I'd be embarresed to have this guy representing my constituency.
Chope isn't necessarily opposed to everything on that list, but his actual reasons for doing this are no less shitty.
This was a private member's bill, meaning it was proposed by a random MP rather than the government. There is a process by which MPs decide which of PMBs will be given a debate and vote, but any one MP can object to it and block the whole thing.
I haven't actually heard about this before, but apparently Chope is part of a group of Tory MPs who have been devoted for years to sabotaging the private member's bill process. I can find two separate occasions (2013 and 2017) on which they camped out in parliament for several days so that they could be first in line to propose private member's bills, and then flooded the list with dozens of garbage proposals in an attempt to stop any others from being given time. Chope also regularly objects to or filibusters any PMBs he can, including everything on that list, and this upskirting bill.
He may have gone too far this time, even other Tories seem to be furious at him. In theory, the PMB procedure could be changed to stop him.

Since this bill had government support, it's likely they'll incorporate its clauses into a government bill and it'll end up passing that way.
Why is one guy able to block them for everyone? What is wrong with your political system?

He also blocked this law only a few minuets a head of the up skirting law as well, so an all prat if ever there was one.
So this was a private members bill, not a government bill. It was being debated after 2:30 on a Friday, so the rules are that you can't have a vote, however you can pass it to a second reading or whatever if no one objects. As Smurfy said, this guy continually objects to everything on principle.
Wow, Theresa May has intervened

According to BBC, the government will allocate time for the bill - sidestepping the PMB process and ensuring it will get a vote regardless of Chode's objection
Chode has spoken out, says he supports the ban and chatted some shit about feeling victimised by the coverage

Glad we have someone to defend parliamentary procedure against the will of the entire parliament. Poor guy must feel like he's been taken advantage of in a way that he never consented to
>Sir Christopher Chope said he was objecting to parliamentary procedure rather than the law itself.
>The Christchurch MP said he was not "a dinosaur" and was being "scapegoated".
Get fucked, you crusty old fart.
He really didn't think things through with this objection did he.
I'd laugh if this was also a trap set up against the torys that do these objections all the time.
What a fucking contrarian retard
Why am I being targeting after doing somebody that nobody wanted?
Country would be better off if he "accidentally" walked in front of a bus tbh, looks like yet another example of a shitheap politician that won't be dislodged by any other means.
Is there some actually-sane reason to object to private member's bills? I don't have the best grasp of the British legislative system, but I can't see why it would be a bad thing. It's the only way a minority party can introduce legislation, and that alone seems pretty important to keep. Or is he only doing this because the Conservatives lead right now, as a fuck-you to the non-governing parties?
