The United States is expected to withdraw from the United Nation’s Human Rights Council, Reuters reported on Friday.
An anonymous source told Reuters to expect an “imminent” departure from the global forum for human rights.
The council begins a three-week session July 6.
The relationship between U.S. and the Human Rights Council has always been tenuous. The U.S. delegation was not a part of the council for three years under former President George W. Bush, though then-President Barack Obama rejoined in 2009.
Not that we currently deserve to be, really.
Considering who our current president is, it's not really a place we belong anyways. The only reason there haven't been more human rights violations under his watch is that there's enough checks and balances in his way that he can't simply do whatever he wants.
This is good. Surely without membership they cannot veto UNHRC motions against themselves? Opening them up to prosecution for the terrifying Nazi shit going on in the South right now.
Why though? Ah forget it... I think I should give up trying to make sense of lunacy.
It's okay, our ally Saudi Arabia will keep things in order.
Yeah I don't actually mind this. Have the members in that council have a dubious human rights record.
Because Obama did it.
"though then-President Barack Obama rejoined in 2009."
It's just keeping up with the "erase everything Obama did from history" attitude the GOP's been going with ever since Trump won.
not that I support this move but also the human rights council is a fucking joke
why is a human rights council a partisan issue, GW did it because he was explicitly violating human rights, does this mean trump plans to do the same or worse?
I do when the reason given is that "they are too mean on Israel >:(". Maybe Israel shouldn't be gunning down protesters.
It has some power though and if they left it would be a big sacrifice of power. Also there's a chance it'll weaken the UN, which would be a bad thing imo

This is still pretty bad, though. And it's going to keep getting worse so long as Republicans have access to power in this country.
