Welcome to "Computer Illiterate People Who Think They Know Things (& General Chat)", the thread that began as a place to mock and vent about the computer-illiterate people who tend to make our lives hell, but is now basically just general chat for computer nerds. We get up to some weird stuff (I'm pretty sure I was crowned emperor at one point?) but we're pretty open. Go ahead and talk about the latest hardware-level vulnerability Intel admitted to, the half-broken 8-bit micro you found in a dumpster, the various ways PHP sucks, or heck, even tell your story of a computer-illiterate person being an idiot about it.
In addition to this thread we also have a [Steam Group], the occasional Google Hangout, and an IRC channel:
Server: benjeffery.ca
Port: 6667
Channel: #cipwttkt
If you're looking for tech support, you'll have better luck in Quick Questions That Don't Deserve A Thread, or whatever the newest version of that thread is. Or if you're looking for PC building advice, there's a thread for that too.
Only real rule (besides the global FP rules) is, try not to go all fanboy on us. Windows vs. Linux vs. Mac? Vim vs. Emacs? Which Javascript framework is best? Who cares? Just have fun with it.
Previous Threads
(And yes, the version number is in hexadecimal, thank you for noticing)
This thread has hex thread number. I'm sticking to this one.
It was also posted slightly earlier, and has a earlier thread ID (bszwk vs bszwl).
well fuck my ass
Turns out that was a bullshit excuse all along (who could have predicted?)
New update gave us a new post count limit, I'm not sure where it is but it's at least smaller than 2000. So, ridiculously small.
Judging by how the forums have been slower over the past week or two, I'm guessing that didn't actually turn out to be the case.
I'm sorry I killed two threads without really realizing
gladly
It appears to be 1000.
Welp, better start picking a name for the next thread, since we'll be there in no time.
I tried to do a "It has been [X] days since the last hardware-level security flaw" title but couldn't make it fit. Any other suggestions?
Why did they compress the notifications to a single button
Looks like we're no longer allowed to see the changes page either. It just 404's if you go to it.
Because fuck you!
Welp, I got a new CPU to upgrade my memepad t60 today so I can run 64bit shit. After hours and hours of troubleshooting I've concluded that the CPU is faulty. I'm so fuckin frustrated.
Wasn't it something like 5000 posts when oldpunch had it for a while? We did that in less than a week. I can only imagine how long this thread will last. Although the forums are quieter than they used to be.
Why on earth is it fucking impossible to sell this Mac mini? Nobody wants some 2013 Mac with an SSD?
ill give u five dollars
They're virtually worthless and have no feasible use cases. Sorry.
how much do you want for it?
fuck that, I'll do six
Why would someone want a Mac Mini?
I'll give 4 dollars.
I just deleted the Web browser executable for good measure
Eh, they're tiny and have decent specs. I'd probably get one for cheap if I can just use it as a little server or something to host some basic stuff for home.
In my DC, there's a 1u shelf that has like, 8 of them stacked ontop of eachother
Sounds like it'd get pretty toasty
Mac minis use ULV Intel chips, they require the bare minimum of airflow to function
I actually used mine as a server for a while, it has an SSD as boot and a 1TB secondary drive, I upgraded it myself.
If you’re actually asking to buy it add me on Steam. I mostly use /r/hardwareswap for selling stuff so that’s where I’ve been trying to sell this thing for 2 months.
Rented Amazon AWS Servers for the first time for work today.
Holy moly those prices.
Also why can I not rent every tier from the get-go?
