http://i.imgur.com/Rk3dx40.png Welcome to the Pokémon general discussion thread. Don't fanboy over any one generation, especially generation 1 , and claim all others to be shit or something. Violators will be screencapped and belittled. http://cdn.bulbagarden.net/upload/9/93/Bag_Pok%C3%A9_Ball_Sprite.png Obligatory Background Information Pokémon is a series of video games primarily for Nintendo handheld game systems, as well as the overarching franchise based on these games. Though many things differ depending on a specific canon's interpretation of the series, what remains constant is the focus on creatures known as Pokémon, which can be captured, trained, and used to compete against one another in battle or, more recently, other activities. http://cdn.bulbagarden.net/upload/4/47/Bag_Helix_Fossil_Sprite.png A brief history of Pokémon games http://www.serebii.net/pokedex-rs/icon/025.gif Gen I- While these games are rough - like, really rough - around the edges, one can't deny there's a charm even playing them today; the same charm that engrossed millions of people into the superpower franchise Pokémon is today. New features -Everything -151 new Pokémon -Red, Blue and Yellow (RBY) -Pokémon Snap! -Pokémon Stadium -Pinball -Pokémon TCG maybe if you count that idk http://www.serebii.net/pokedex-dp/icon/248.gif Gen II- Originally meant to be direct numbered sequels to gen 1, GSC gives us tons of callbacks to their prequels, even as much as giving us the whole Kanto region on top of the new Johto region! It basically fixed many of the problems gen 1 had, from largely un-uglying the sprites, to fixing it's plethora of bugs, to balancing Psychic types, to making the special stat not freaking stupid. New features: -Breeding -Extremely rare pallete swaps called Shinies- -Held Items -Happiness -A Day/Night system -Genders -Steel and Dark types -100 new Pokémon -Gold, Silver and Crystal (GSC) -Pokémon Stadium II http://www.serebii.net/pokedex-rs/icon/306.gif Gen III- Set in a more tropical setting than its predecessors, gen 3 goes Advanced™ with hugely improved graphics and a region focusing on balance. It sees criticism for being the only generation to not be compatible with the previous generation and having a world filled with "Too much water", but it also added tons of depth to gameplay both casually and competitively, trumpets, a pair of great remakes of the original Red and Green, trumpets, and a new cast of Pokémon with tons of fan-favorites. New features: -Contests -Abilities -Natures -Reformation of IVs/EVs -Double battles -135 new Pokémon -Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald (RSE) -Fire Red, Leaf Green (FRLG) -Pokémon Colosseum -Pokémon Ranger -Mystery Dungeon series -Various other sidegames http://www.serebii.net/pokedex-dp/icon/445.gif Gen IV- The series finally makes the partial jump into 3d with a generation filled with great games. While some criticize the generation on it's awful story pacing and generally sluggish gameplay; it gave us some of the best Pokémon in the series inculding a bunch of evolutions for previous Pokémon giving them use in competitive, a competitive godsend in the form of the physical special split, some dope ass slap bass, wonderful remakes of Gold and Silver, as well as the ability to communicate, trade, and battle other trainers across the world with Online! New features: -Wi-fi -Global Trade Station (GTS) -The Physical/Special Split -3D rendering of the overworld -107 new Pokémon -Diamond, Pearl and Platinum (DPPt) -HeartGold and SoulSilver (HGSS) -Pokémon Battle Revolution -Ranger/Dungeon Sequels http://www.serebii.net/pokedex-bw/icon/571.png Gen V- Based in Unova, the first region to not be based on Japan, but the New York region. While these titles are polarizing, with many criticizing the quantity over quality of Pokémon this generation, the overuse of weather in the competitive scene, and the initial titles limiting players to only the current gen of Pokémon until postgame; this generation gave us great characters, an amazing story, and possibly the best soundtrack of any generation. New features: -Triple and Rotation Battles -Hidden abilities -Rotation of seasons monthly that alter the world and the Pokémon in it. -The Dreamworld (no longer supported) -Reusable TM's -156 new Pokémon, the most ever added at once! -Black/White -Black 2/White 2 (the first actual story-sequels in the Pokémon franchise) -Pokémon Conquest -Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity http://www.serebii.net/pokedex-xy/icon/706.png Gen VI- The first fully 3d portable games in the series take place in Kalos, based on real world France. Story and pacing are considered by many to be lacking but gen 6 gave a beautiful visual overhaul and the long overdue trainer customization along with meta-altering Mega Evolution, letting older Pokémon see a rise in popularity. New features: -A departure from sprites and a full 3d engine -Fairy types -Mega Evolution -Unrestricted movement -Super-Training -trainer customization -Friend Safari -Pokémon-Amie -72 new Pokémon -X and Y -Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire -Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon http://www.serebii.net/pokedex-dp/icon/103.gif Gen VII- The latest games set in the Hawaiian-themed Alola region. The customs of this island chain are very different from those of other regions, where trainers set out to complete "The Island Challenge" rather than defeating gym leaders. Boasts the best graphics and lowest framerates of the entire franchise! New features: -One use per-battle super-moves called 'Z-moves' -Removal of the gym leader system: young trainers in Alola must complete several trials that are not necessarily limited to battling -Totem Pokémon: beefy guardian Pokémon acting as "boss fights" -SOS battles: wild Pokémon can call for help, triggering two-on-one fights against you -Hyper Training: an expedient way to maximize your Pokémon's IVs without breeding -Battle Royale: four trainer free-for-all battles in an exciting arena setting -Poké Pelago: a secluded chain of islands your PC-stored Pokémon can visit to participate in various activities, like treasure-hunting and growing berries -Alola forms that alter an already existing Pokémon's type, ability, and appearance -Your Pokédex is now inhabited by a Rotom, your new best friend who gives you directions to your goals -81 new Pokémon -Sun and Moon -ULTRA Sun and ULTRA Moon, coming s o o n http://cdn.bulbagarden.net/upload/8/8e/Juniper_OD.png Helpful Sources http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Main_Page -The Pokémon Wiki, your primary stop for in-depth info on everything Pokémon. http://pokebeach.com/ - http://www.serebii.net/index2.shtml -General Pokémon news and info. Recently released worldwide, the game is designed around players physically traveling to various real-world locations while randomly encountering pokémon as they go. Pokéballs have to be thrown at wild pokémon until they are caught, and catching multiples of the same pokémon will reward players with candies they can use to evolve the ones they've caught. Pokéstops act as item distribution centers, assigned to fixed real-world locations, that allow players to randomly find a variety of items for use during the game, and can also yield eggs. Like in the main games, eggs can be hatched after a certain distance has been traveled by the player. Unlike the main games, gyms can be captured by players and be defended from others by their pokémon. Players can be assigned to one of three teams: Valor, Mystic, or Instinct, and gyms can be captured for the player's respective team. This allows other players of the same team to help defend gyms against players from opposing teams. Remember to stay observant of your surroundings while playing, or you might BLACK OUT -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FAQ Q: I just got back/ am getting into the Pokémon series, where do you recommend I pick it up? A: Any of the main series games are good introductions to the series. If you wish to start at the beginning, Red and Blue are available on the 3ds e-shop. If you want to start with what's easiest, the newer games are better at easing new players into mechanics and are overall more streamlined and accessible. Q: Which generation is considered the best/worst? A: No generation is objectively better than the other and there's no "bad" generation. All have their strengths and weaknesses and the answer changes based on whose being asked. Gen 5 best gen Q: What's a "Nuzlocke"? A: A Nuzlocke is a type of self inflicted challenge run made to make the game more personal and difficult. They all have a ruleset that can vary but almost always have these basic rules: - You can only catch one Pokémon per route and only the first one you encounter on that route. - All Pokémon you catch must be given a nickname to strengthen personal bonds - If a Pokémon faints, it is considered "dead" and you must release it or at least relegate it to your PC. There's plenty of other rules one can add that do things like limit item usage, only catching specific types or kinds of Pokémon, or using mods to alter the game, such as completely randomizing what Pokémon one will encounter. Q: Most main series games are released in a pair. What's the difference between the two? A: The largest difference tends to be exclusivity of Pokémon. Some routes in the game will have different Pokémon available depending on what version you have (i.e. The Vulpix Line is exclusive to Pokémon Blue while the Growlithe Line is exclusive to Pokémon Red). With the exception of the gen 1 games, the Pokémon on the front of the box will be a focus in the main story, while the other one won't. Besides Pokémon exclusivity most games have different details in each game, such as different Pokédex entries or a route being aesthetically different. If you're deciding on which to get, look up the exclusive Pokémon of each game to judge which one has a lineup that appeals more to you. https://i.imgur.com/nSpkG8O.jpg
sorry for not staying relevant so what was the general disappointment in gen 5 and 7?
you mean 6 and 7. my cheeky and stealthy insertion of those points into our old OP was just a joke on my part, but if you want a serious answer........... the tl;dr of it is that the jump to 3D has had a noticeable effect on on the content each 3DS game has had: far fewer new pokemon, reduced/non-existent post-game content, greatly simplified/outright afterthought areas, dungeons, routes, and features, etc.
seems its was smart to stop at gen 5 and not keep on going from what im seeing
not saying they're awful. they're certainly worth playing. just not necessarily worth replaying, imo. I encourage you to form your own opinion on the 3D games
Unrelated to his question, but now with the 3D on topic you could push a line about Pokken in the op.
gen 5 core games were so radically different and cool. gen 6 took like 3 features, ditched the rest, and return to the old pokemon formula. Gen 7 again tried to be different, credit is due, but the handholding is a tad too much. They also have lackluster post-story content. they are necessary steps towards a better future. Not stagnant.
Gen 7 also took a step back in terms of online functionality. Gen 5, though I never got a chance to use any of it, had revamped multiplayer features and even had an area dedicated to it in Black. Gen 6 had the PSS which, in my opinion, was the best implementation of multiplayer in the franchise. You could see which friends were online, any nearby trainers, send requests and it was all seamless. In gen 7 you had to do all this from Join Avenue which was it's own nightmare. In terms of post-game, gen 5 probably had the best period. You had the entire second half of the region to explore and there was the whole sidequest with finding the sages. 7's is absolutely pitiful.
Was down at the DollarStore today... https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/109833/fb01d492-558e-4aa1-8c82-7a65ce046602/image.png https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/109833/3e09c90f-af5e-4ddf-8019-de1815ef8aab/image.png https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/109833/0146d61d-69f0-4501-a436-7c39b82a98c5/image.png
IMO there's a lot of technical evidence that points toward gen6 just being a product of exhausting a lot of its budget on technical assets (with gen7 to follow) The mesh and animation quality as well as dynamic lighting is insane for the 3DS (with many iterative engine improvements in gen7). They could have made some lower quality meshes and animations more suitable for 3DS hardware or even taken the time to optimize the existing assets they had, but the only reason you'd make such high quality assets and leave them in (killing performance) is because you're modernizing your tools, assets and procedures for the future.
The only hate I remember Gen 5 getting was "Vanilluxe? More like Vanill-SUCKS" which basically sparked a massive "Pokemon designs suck now" debate that brought about "genwunners" a lot more prominently. Which I never understood, because Gen5 was the gen I just happened to skip (eventually did play it, but after it "passed") and even when I looked at the Pokemon before I played it, I thought they had a lot of really cool ones? Ones that I think would stand out generations later. Excadrill? Chandelure? Hydreigon? Krookodile? This gen had a lot of good Pokemon. And the game stood out, too! I wasn't even feeling "okay this is getting stale" yet (but I know others were) about Gen 3 or 4, but this already felt really fresh. Gen 6... Felt tiring. I feel like the chibi overworld models and full-sized battle models is better than Always Full Size like we have in Gen7, though, but the games felt more uninspired, honestly. Props for introducing the best type (Fairy), though, but... Flare was a boring villain team, and idk it just didn't stick with me. We had some great Pokemon here, too (Goodra, Hawlucha) but overall, eh. Mega Evolutions were really cool, but cue Game Freak tradition of "we introduced a concept in this gen and now it's abandoned." Gen 7 I dislike how they tried to change it. Yeah, they wanted to get away from repetitive gyms but instead they made the process more boring. The trials are much less interesting than any puzzle we've had in a gym. It starts so slowly and is such a pain to trudge through. Team Skull is arguably the best villain team we've had in the whole series, and I'm sad to see we'll likely not see much more of them and Guzma, if at all. And then there was the Gen 1 pandering of "Alolan forms," which is a cool concept of regional forms but I would be money that they're not going to continue it (and if they do, they'll likely neglect later gens like they did with Mega Evolutions; I'm shocked Audino has a Mega Evolution).
Trubbish and its evo was the real king of gen 5 mockery. Gen 5 had the coolest legendaries in my opinion though. And Reshiram is the most cuddlable legendary of them all. One thing I didn't like about gen 5 was that it had an abundance of glass cannon pokemon and a lack of tankier or balanced ones. This also meant all the battles were over in a few turns. Which I get people prefer over dragfests, but I'd like having pokemon that don't die in one or two hits all the same. And I like the alola forms, personally. They breathe new life into old pokemon. I'd prefer they do that rather than just shove old pokemon into new games. The best thing gen 7 did though was give drizzle to pelipper. My rain team could finally ditch politoed, the weakest link of all rain teams.
I don't get why people say "sentient bag of trash" is bad design but gen 1's "sentient pile of sewage" is okay?
Christ, going from gen III to Diamond really makes you feel how glacial everything is
Platinum trimmed the fat a bit, I'd recommend playing that instead unless you're going Diamond for nostalgia reasons.
When in doubt, stick to third versions. Gen 6 was build with Pokemon Z in mind, and it not coming to fruition shows, as XY are quite akin to DP.
The new always has more relevancy in mind than something that settled the base even if it its the same. It is the psychological part of the afraid to the new. Not really a bad thing until the criticize before thinking part gets in the middle. But it only gets dense when you are talking to that guy who thinks disliking everything at first sight and denying everyone makes him right. When Foongus was on its place for 'being lazy and recycled' it lasted less than a week and died pretty quick. But I don't know, maybe I was lucky to not find the noisy part arguing about designs since then.

That and Eevee having gender differences now. Wonder if that will carry over to its evolutions.
Will that be like an official thing and be passed on to the core RPG games or is it just a Let's go! series thing?

I've always loved the region paintings.
