Bonjour, everyone! Don't worry. Everything is bon! We stopped the terrorists.
I think it's more depressing that the government and the public is thinking that these measures will do anything to improve their safety, while all it really does is reduce their freedoms.
They are not.
I guess the terrorists didn't see that one coming! Guess they're gonna have to pack up and go home
god i can already feel the deluge of artsy photos of the tower behind the fence caged like our SOULS
Honestly due to all the fences and stuff my trip to Paris in Jan wasn't great, ruins the look of everything. Was much nicer when I previously visited the UK and Europe. Shame they think it will help
Terrorists win.
Isn't the Eiffel Tower basically indestructible, though? I remember hearing somewhere that it was.
I can't imagine why someone would float that idea. It looks overbuilt, but who knows, depending on the metallurgy available at the time of construction. I can tell you from past experiences that it is not invulnerable to nanite attacks.
it is definitely not invulnerable from bogdabot nanobots
I'm not from France nor have I ever been there (Do want to visit though), wouldn't it be possible their intelligence service knows off potential threats or talks? I mean Terrorist to go after soft-targets and I've been around/affiliated with the military most of my life and I know overseas they harden a lot of soft targets. None-the-less it is still sad to see Landmarks slowly being barricaded, specially when they where once open spaces.
pretty sure a 10ft fence wouldn't have helped the world trade center. (fun fact i assumed the fence would be 12ft, but before i posted i check the article and saw it was only 10.)
Après mur le déluge
This is security in the sense it will make the public feel secure.
Or zeds.
Or Team America
The intelligence services will do everything they can to prevent terrorism. The issue is that this is at the expense of everything else. Basically the whole "security vs freedom" conundrum. I don't see how spending tons of money to build fences around the Eiffel tower can be justified. If someone wants to plan a terrorist attack, they'll just look for another spot with just the same population density. It's a game of whack a mole, it doesn't reduce the amount of victims.
Wow. This is really sad. The Eiffel is such a marvel, an icon from a time long gone. Really sad that measures like these are necessary. Also sad that people believe that this will counter terrorist attacks. My prediction for the next monument to be fenced off: Brandenburg Gate
I guess that makes sense, but I can see how the Eiffel is a major source of revenue. With that being said they want to protect that revenue source and maybe beef up security so people are not afraid to visit it. It may be more of a gesture to tourists.
it's mid to late 1800's teir steel. All bessemer stuff, high in nitrogen. Super brittle, plus however many years of aging since being built. I mean it's not about to explode or anything, but i doubt it'd meet modern building standards.
Low self-esteem,the ultimate weapon! The terrorists will look at themselves in the glass and realize how shitty they are! It's a genius plan!
The Eiffel Tower is made of wrought iron, not steel.
well even worse then
But they are not, at all. If someone wants to blow up the Eiffel Tower I doubt a fence is going to stop them.
who do people always pull this "terrorists win" shit anytime safety measures are used
because OBVIOUSLY if you present a solution of any type, it's admitting defeat! but yeah i agree with you it's retarded
Or the nazis
Such a tragedy to see a well known and respected landmark turned into essentially a border check point. Security points like this take away from the message this landmark is supposed to represent.
I feel like it would probably be pretty hard to blow up the tower. The US has over 100 (now defunct) microwave radio towers that were built to withstand a nearby nuclear blast in order to retain communication in the event of nuclear warfare. They aren't ridiculously tough towers, they are just designed to allow a blast wave to roll through them with minimal surface area presented to be pushed on by the blast. We think of explosives as magic, but they really just push really hard really quick in every direction. They will seek out the direction of least resistance. The base of the tower presents a massive chunk of reinforced concrete and a lattice structure that would probably give zero fucks about anything other than a ridiculously oversized explosive or a directed charge. Anything else would just channel through the lattice structure and do very little structural damage. That said, it is a place where people gather, which is, I imagine, the real threat being countered here. The structure itself, iron or not, is probably borderline impervious to something like a car bomb.
