Ocean's 8 stars blame dominance of male critics for film's mixed.. https://uk.movies.yahoo.com/oceans-8-cast-say-abundance-white-male-film-critics-unfair-exclusive-074829502.html Stars of Ocean’s 8, the heist movie featuring all-female leads, have accused male critics of failing to appreciate their film. Speaking to Yahoo Movies, Mindy Kaling called the dominance of white male reviewers “unfair”. “If I had to base my career on what white men wanted I would be very unsuccessful, so there is obviously an audience out there who want to watch things like [Ocean’s 8], what I work on, what Sarah [Paulson] works on.” Co-star Cate Blanchett concurred, saying the media had failed to make the mindshift the movie industry had when it came to gender equality. “The conversation has to change,” she said, “and the media has a huge responsibility.”
You can easily go to Rotten Tomatoes and find female critics not liking the movie, but I can see their point here: A study by USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative was released earlier this week, examining the gender and ethnic profile of US critics who wrote about last year’s 100 most successful films found 80% were men and 82% white. “I submit to you that men and women are not the same, they like different things,” she said. “Sometimes they like the same thing, but sometimes their tastes diverge. If the Tomatometer is slighted so completely to one set of tastes that drives box office in the United States, absolutely.”
Here we go again...
This does nothing to explain the positive reviews that Bridesmaids and Pitch Perfect received
My only complaint was Julia Roberts should've been in it. Otherwise I don't see an issue with the concept.
Maybe if you make a good movie you'd get good fucken reviews. Sick of this bullshit where people just blame the PATRIARCHY if a movie starring women is shit.
Saw that coming...
We're they expecting perfect reviews because it's an all female cast? A almost 70% score is exactly what I thought this was going to get dispite the casting and that's not terrible either. Can we please start using Annihilation as an example for really good story and female cast
Additionally, other than Ocean's 11, the other movies in the series got worse or about the same in terms of review scores on rottentomatoes.
what white men   I think white men championing white male voices  white males Because clearly, male critics of other races aren't individuals, they're all hyper-feminists specially trained to give them fantastic reviews.
I can't recall what publication put the article up, but I remember just recently someone had asked the question why there wasn't a big backlash against an all-female Ocean's movie compared to all-female Ghostbusters. How prolific that article was, as now the actresses are profiling to start a girls vs boys dialog to drum up controversy.
Yeah it's not the fact that literally nobody could give a shit about another oceans cash in, clearly it's the patriarchy's doing.
Wait, hold the fuck up, Julia Roberts isn't in it? What the fuck were they thinking?
She's in the very beginning. She might be in more but I've only seen the first minute of it because they accidentally started playing Oceans 8 when I went to see the Incredibles 2
have they considered the possibility that their movie sucks
>“I submit to you that men and women are not the same, they like different things,” she said. “Sometimes they like the same thing, but sometimes their tastes diverge. If the Tomatometer is slighted so completely to one set of tastes that drives box office in the United States, absolutely.” Why is this an issue now and not the 10 billion other times where critics and audiences disagreed? Oh right, easy way to cover for your movie not resonating with audiences, never mind.
How ironic would it be if this movie didn't pass the bechdel test?
Imagine non-ironically being this racist and sexist.
I mean, yeah, the Tomatometer is heavily biased towards pretentious white men who love cinema, I don't think anybody can deny that because those are the kinds of people who write film reviews. It shows as a bias against low-brow comedies, as well. Masterpieces of idiocy like Hot Rod get 40% or worse scores in the RT aggregator.
No, they're just being forced to do this by the companies holding their contracts. See: Ghostbusters 2016
You cannot get mad when you make a movie that clearly isn't for your targeted audience and get shitty reviews because the audience doesn't like it. When this happens you cannot blame sexism because in this case it has nothing to do with sexism. You made a shit movie which was targeted towards the wrong audience, you cannot force people to like or enjoy something simply because you say so. I'm really tired of the mentality if you don't like something it makes you sexist, racist, etc. This might be a poor example, but lets say there is a gay-romance film, if I don't want to watch or I didn't like it after I watched it does that make me homophobic? No, it just means that film wasn't my cup of tea. Same reason I did not like the new ghost-busters. It had nothing to do with the actresses in the film, its just the movie was pretty shit.
At least one of the RT reviews (by a female no less) criticized the film on this level with the element of Ocean’s motivation being due to the ex-boyfriend who got her in jail. So who knows, that may be possible.
It's yet another Ghostbusters reboot, where they blame penis for their all vagina-starring film instead of blaming it on being terrible. This whole idea of a bunch of women stealing jewelry though is kind of silly though... isn't that a little... stereotypical? Couldn't you easily argue that the film itself is sexist?
Do people forget that some films considered some of the greatest ever made (such as Alien and Aliens) have starred women in the lead role when they say this shit?
It seems like ever since Ghostbusters 2016, this sort of tactic has become more common with film producers. They're trying to take advantage of the "outraged first, verify claims never" crowd to deflect any criticism of their films (usually through inserting a token minority character or making an "all female/black/LGBT" reboot). Like they can't simply accept that people simply don't like their films, they're convinced it must be some conspiracy by bigoted man-children to bring their films down.
But fucking why, Ghostbusters bombed hard and lost Sony a shitload of money.
This movie isn't doing well regardless, so it seem like a last ditch attempt to make people go see it.
So its like selling a bad product and telling the customer that its their fault they didnt like it?
It amazes me the ignorance of these women. This isn't a race thing - their movie is plain shit. In fact Ocean 8's 68% rating really isn't bad all things considered. I mean holy shit look at this film about a bunch of white dudes playing a game of tag. It's got a LOWER rotten tomatoes score than Ocean 8. Frankly these women are insulting. Making racist and sexist excuses where there simply isn't one. Your movie is bad - and frankly its not the actors fault but rather the screenwriter, director, etc.
Hey weren't most of the critics for Black Panther white men? And didn't that movie do gangbusters because it was a good fucking movie? (Wonder Women, too)
