The series problem is that audience expectation for the finale are incredibly high, so either they'll be literally writing history in the final episode, or everyone will be super disappointed by the anticlimax.

Doug Kmiec, a legal scholar on presidential power and a former Reagan administration Justice official who knew Mueller from his prior work at the department, said the special counsel wants — but does not need — to question the president to finish his report. “He wants to give the president an opportunity to explain any ambiguity and any impression that he was favoring a foreign adversary,” Kmiec said. “Robert Mueller would say it would be irresponsible not to give the president a chance to explain himself.” The implications of this statement are enormous. That Mueller is offering Trump a chance to "explain himself" as a courtesy, as opposed to a necessity to the conclusion of his investigation into the specifics of the obstruction of justice report can really only be interpreted one way: he has determined, and has conclusive evidence supporting, that Donald Trump has committed the felony offense of Obstruction of Justice and will be referring charges.

He knows he can't without increasing his criminal liability by adding additional counts of making false statements and/or perjury. He is also hoping that refusing to testify will delay the release of the findings until after the mid-terms, both because it decreases the chances that a significant enough shift in congressional power will occur for impeachment, and because it increases the amount of time he has to continue attacking the credibility of the FBI and DOJ. His "strategy" of screaming WITCH HUNT on twitter while his sycophants in Congress and his propagandists at Fox drum up false controversy is working. Public support is now almost perfectly split along party lines, with only 50% of registered voters believing Mueller's investigation is "fair."

I'm worried that republicans will do nothing if Mueller brings real charges

If this happens before the Midterms, then they'll be voted out, get Trump impeached and probably start falling like dominos once ties start appearing between them and the corruption behind their party.

Adding to this shit-storm of dissonance, I'm starting to see a number of memes on Facebook harping on about what was found in the IG report regarding Comey, as some sort of "conspiracy" to stop Trump at all costs.

Well, I have some confidential information that Trump has recently been watching an instruction video on how to avoid any consequences by disregarding any evidence used against him. I can tell you that the instruction video was produced by a man called Shaggy (might be a code name) and from what I've gathered the premise of it is basically answering any question with "It wasn't me." I am pretty sure Trump might try this as he may consider it to be a valid tactic.
