I'm pretty surprised the mafia is more powerful than ever. I thought smaller ethnic gangs would have eroded their power just by being more numerous and nebulous.
I guess when the party life is going strong for the rich, private armies growing, and international trade dominating the world economy I guess seeing people working behind the scenes and "empowering" a few through old fashioned Tammany Hall politics, this was a guarantee when prosperity comes to the world until it gets the crackdown (if it will).

Having read the article it's obvious the best way to fight the mafia is to fight for accountability and transparency in finance. Which allows me to shoehorn in the fact the UK via London and the Channel Islands has been acting as a haven for sanctions-dodging, money laundering, and tax evasion for ages. Organizations like the drug cartels of south America and the Mafia exploit any weakness their parent government might have, be it illegalization of drugs, firearms, or when the government simply stops doing its job to protect its constituents.
