https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2018/06/usa-family-separation-torture/ The sickening images of children cruelly separated from their parents and held in cages as a result of Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ policy of ‘zero-tolerance’ will leave an indelible stain on the reputation of the USA, said Amnesty International today. “This is a spectacularly cruel policy, where frightened children are being ripped from their parent’s arms and taken to overflowing detention centres, which are effectively cages. This is nothing short of torture. The severe mental suffering that officials have intentionally inflicted on these families for coercive purposes, means that these acts meet the definitions of torture under both US and international law,” said Erika Guevara-Rosas, Amnesty International’s Americas Director.
Thank you. Please don't reward our administration for these vile acts.
I don't blame you. I can only hope all of us actually decent people in America can work to restore our country's reputation on the world stage once this despot's poison is finally out of our system.
I was thinking of visiting some friends sometime this year. I think I'll ask them to come over here instead, I think they might consider it.
With the way things are currently, I wouldn't be surprised if you got detained while visiting for being a foreigner. The Trump administration is full of a bunch of fucking lunatics.
This is chilling. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PoncXfYBAVI
The people who've stuck with Trump so far - who support him even now... are sociopaths. I promise you, Trump could be sending these kids to gas chambers, could be having them lined up against a wall and shot in front of their parents, and all they'd say would be "Shouldn't have come seeking asylum or entered the country illegally, then."
If there isn't an international rule about breaking up families, there should be one.
Who would have guessed a sleazy reality tv host could be capable of such darkness.
Since it's been defined as torture, it means we are in violation of the UN Conventions against Torture which we signed in 1985. That, itself, is considered a part of the Customary International Law - which is what is 'generally regarded as legal or illegal'. It is also against our own domestic laws. This is further supported by the recent ban on using torture in our military regarding prisoners under our custody. (Also under the law) So basically it's illegal, illegal, illegal, and illegal to be doing it principally to torture these families. It is unavoidable if we're going to prosecute criminals, that the children must be remanded to the state pending their trial and potential sentencing - but it is not unavoidable when the intent of this policy was not to simply prosecute criminals but, in fact, an actual scheme brought before USCIS in 2016 by the Trump administration (likely thanks to Stephen Miller) to specifically attempt to target and stifle Asylum seekers from seeking asylum in the US - that it was a deterrent which functioned through the demonstration of grievous injustice.
To continue to support such a travesty of a human being you've got to have either; Something horribly wrong with you An incredibly loose moral compass Zero sense of ethics All of the above Legitimately nothing about Trump is a positive. Not a single thing. As an aside; the fact such awful practices as these have been implemented so fast should be quite a large fuckin air raid siren about the Republican party. The entire party appears to have zero qualms with stripping people of their basic human dignities for simply being brown and in the wrong place. They didn't even fucking hesitate. The entire party should be held accountable for these atrocities, not just the orange gimp himself.
People are just getting a little emotional that the "think of the children" party is taking kids away from their parents, and also lost track of nearly 1,500 children in the process.
Chances are you will die of old age before going to the US.
I hate the 'think of the children' argument but its actually amazing how this time, it kind of seriously applies, because holy shit I don't care how insane and racist someone is, anyone supporting this is a fucking moron.
The GOP control only increases when you go from federal to state. There are 26 GOP trifectas (R governor and both state legislatures) compared to the 8 Dem ones. They control 32 state legislatures compared to 14 Dem controlled and 4 splits. The GOP overall holds the majority of power across the whole country, and it's turning into the party of Trump.
It's a blind cult following. This policy is less effective than Obama's. It costs more. It breaks international laws. It makes us look fucking horrible on the international stage. It breeds resentment against the United States. It's a policy that was derived likely by a white supremacist who started a hate website specifically targeting immigration. It is justified by bible quotes which were used to defend the enslavement of african americans. The person responsible for the policy refuses to state that it is their policy and instead is declaring it to be a law passed by Democrats. It gets the UN on our ass. It gets our allies on our ass. It sends shockwaves of unrest throughout the country. It is leading to children dying in cages. It is causing us to lose faith in ICE - which we will still need after this fucked up crisis passes. There is nothing good in this policy. In the paraphrased words of fucking Hank Hill "You're not making the problem any better, you're just making America worse."
There are no words to describe the sheer evil and unbridled chaos of this man, nor express the anger and disgust any decent human being should be feeling towards his actions.
Well, the good news is that our national guard is already taking a stand on it. Both New York(1) and Massachusetts(2) have stated that in the event the National Guard is called they will refuse to send any of their resources to the southwest border so long as this policy is in effect. (1) New York Won't Send It's National Guard to Border (2) Baker Cancels National Guard Deployment To Border, Citing 'Inhum..
Before the Civil War congressmen were fucking beating each other to near death. It's amazing how Trumples has gotten tensions probably to levels not seen since that war.
For those keeping score, this is now being both labeled by Amnesty International as Torture and by the American Pediatrics Association as Child Abuse. It's looking like today Trump's nose is going to get pretty damn bloodied. http://thehill.com/latino/392790-american-academy-of-pediatrics-president-trumps-family-separation-policy-is-child
I just need to hear it from the Pope as well and maybe my mom will finally stop supporting this guy purely because he was the only 'pro-life' candidate.
Supporting this for any period of time is sociopathic. Pointing out how this administration makes you more wealthy isn't helping your case.
Amazing how you sit out the entire thread until you get a chance to play victim. Clearly that's far more important than the well-being of thousands of children.
Colorado is now pledging to not send resources to the border in the event the National Guard is called. This is coming fast and heavy. In related news, an ex-shelter worker is reporting that they received one week of training to work with traumatized migrant children. Meanwhile, Buzzfeed (I know, I know, but this is a direct quote from the ACLU's Deputy Director) is reporting that "Lee Gelernt, the deputy director of the American Civil Liberties Union's Immigrants’ Rights Project, who is the lead lawyer suing the Trump administration for separating immigrant parents from their children, said immigration authorities are not reuniting children and parents even after the parents have served their time, which is usually two to three days. "Kids are just languishing for months in foster families or government facilities," Gelernt told BuzzFeed News. "If the government is saying there is some process for reuniting them promptly, we haven't seen it." Gelernt said one of the ACLU's plaintiffs had been released after a few days in jail for illegal entry. Eight months later, she still hasn't been reunited with her child.
So you claim you support Trump because you're getting rich, and you say you're not sociopathic? Right. Sociopathy is classified as a lack of empathy and conscience. I can't think of a better descriptor for you, and this by your own admission.
I kinda question that. ICE has only been a thing for 15 years. The country got by without it for over 200 years.
Yeah, ICE needs to be disbanded. The Geheime Staatspolizei weren't allowed to stick around after the fall of the Nazis either, because of the blood on their hands.
True, but it was built from agencies that predates it including the US Customs Service's investigative and intelligence resources and the criminal investigation, detention, and deportation resources of the INS.
The fact that you think the crimes of this administration are an acceptable sacrifice for whatever parts of their policy you agree with speaks volumes about you. And still makes you look like a sociopath.
I don't think disbanding the organization is a great idea - but I do think restructuring it and running a thorough investigation of the thing from the top to the bottom by an independent third party is not only necessary but should already be taking place.
