it's true lol, it used to be hard as fuck for me to distinguish characters in asian movies when i was younger
ever since i went to college though where in most of my classes i'm the only white dude in a sea of chinese/koreans the problem completely disappeared
This is actually a thing regardless of the individual's ethnicity. Basically people have a hard time distinguishing people of other ethnicities. Asians to Whites or Hispanics to Blacks, or whatever combination. A lot of it comes down to familiarity with ones own ethnicity simply from exposure.
Still didn't helped them though.

I would think that white people would be a little easier to distinguish simply because of much greater variance in hair/eye colors.

If one moved to SK and lived there for about 5-10 years they probably would have zero issue whatsoever.
You can kinda witness something similar in other cases, like a lot of people have multiple dogs/children that look similar and can easily tell them apart, while everyone else is amazed at how they can do it.

Hardmode: Tell the difference between a Bangladeshi and an Indian.
At a glance you could progably tell what rough conrer of the world someone is from but much of the world gets very grey in a lot of places.
