So basically they got something for nothing.
Wonder what the reaction from the right would be if Obama was in the exact same position?? 🤔🤔
What, exactly, did NK "get?" I wish people could see the bigger picture in this. Trump is a deranged madman who, for the better part of a year, consistently threatened to nuke and overthrow North Korea on twitter, and could very well be just one bad day away from doing something wildly disastrous. One of the main things about military exercises is that they're projections of force- which isn't something you should be doing if you're trying to ease tensions with somebody. They're unnecessary and detrimental to the current climate. And this only applies to major demonstrations and not routine training. The soldiers are still in South Korea, and Kim isn't suddenly going to get it in his head that he can invade Seoul with his poorly trained, underfed army because we've stopped doing elaborate war games on his border. If South Korea agreed to this, then clearly they don't think it's that bad of an idea. The South Korean people in general support the summit and support some kind of peace deal. They're the ones with the most to lose in all this and nobody really seems to value their view on this.If the goal is to avoid war, what we did was extremely benign and baseline.
International recognition as a legitimate state. New possible inroads for infrastructure. A forgivance for the construction of their nuclear arms. The consolidation and firmament of Un's hold over his dictatorship. The whitewashing of Un's massive crimes. Amazing leads for propaganda to his citizens. All in exchange for a hollow promise that he has no intent on following through.
I hate to break it to you, but North Korea is a legitimate state, and it has been ever since the war. They are internationally recognized as a sovereign state, they have a functional government, they have borders, they have an army, they have alliances with powerful actors like China and Russia. Yes, they're a totalitarian dictatorship, but that doesn't mean they are not a state, and sitting on your hands going "you're bad and I'm not going to talk to because you're not a real state" is fucking childish and irresponsible in the game of international politics. We're in a delicate situation and being flippant with millions of people's lives is reckless. I'm pretty sure the ~60 years of dynastic, cultish rule and thorough state brainwashing has done much more propaganda to solidify Kim's dictatorship than a couple of cute photographs of an overweight boy with a bad haircut and an old, orange reality TV star did. Please, be serious.
