This is pretty good, I found their targeting of those two people to be very strange. You don't even really have to like the two that much... but they aren't anti-muslim extremists by any measure.
It seems like there are certain elements in the left that, for lack of a better term, have this sorta' fucked up 'enemy of my enemy is my friend' notion where any criticism of Islam gets pegged as 'islamaphobic' in their eyes. Even if the criticism is measured and well-reasoned, and points to real social problems which exist in those countries and circles, without attacking the religion itself. It's really sorta' idiotic and hypocritical because if these same people were speaking out against, say, Christian extremism in the same tone they'd be absolutely enamored with them. It's like that one middle eastern woman who spoke out on that one university campus about women being mistreated in islamic countries, and the dudes from the local muslim student association went out to her sessions to intimidate her with the blessing of the local feminist organization. It's about as dumb and hypocritical as the right wing's recent love-affair with Russia, and it's a shame that the SPLC makes missteps like this when they could be argued to otherwise do decent work.
Well, at least they admitted that they fucked up. When's the last time anyone ever did that?
This is absolutely right. I listen to Maajid on the radio in Britain quite a lot. He was raised Muslim but is now atheist I think. He may be conservative, but he's very reasonable and I like to include both liberal and conservative voices in my listening habits to avoid becoming too partisan.
That's true, but they'd rather have kept this up and not get in trouble for it. I've listened to Majid's explanation of this and they knew they fucked up from the very beginning, they kept moving the goalposts when he complained to them until finally they've got into legal trouble.
