When I buy games on steam, I usually categorize them by the sale or bundle I bought them in, as seen here:

As you can see, it's getting pretty cluttered, and I can't help but wonder if there's some better way to sort it all. I'm curious, what do you guys do?
I have a category to separate games that I've pretty much fully completed and then another for the last few games I bought.
Back before there were a bajillion games on steam it was something like:
-Valve SP
-Valve MP
-Shooter
-Casual/Puzzle
-Strategy
Was thinking about asking this too, just organized this yesterday or the day before, used to just be a games and an unfinished catagory.

I like sorting things by how long they take to beat (characters at the beginning are so they're in the right order) with a few extra categories thrown in to cover stuff that complicates things, then I use favorites for whatever I'm currently playing

A recent user?
How boring
2 categories.
-anime games
-not anime games
For a while I tried categorizing, but I let it fall apart and now it'd be way too much of a pain.

Some of the categories are broader than their names suggest.
This thread actually just made me realize how large my library is now and that I should start sorting my 900+ games (and also stop buying games on sale I won't probably won't play anytime soon).
Alphabetically.

i have a super complex sorting system with games put into numerous categories for level of completion (unplayed, unfinished, finished, 100%, and "in progress" for games that i'm currently playing), genres (of which games can be assigned multiple), number of players, and series/franchise

I really need to organize this
i haven't actually categorized any of my games in years so that "games" category at the bottom basically contains half my library

I used to sort them into genre as well as them being completed or not. I wanted to at least try out all my games back then. I up on that idea pretty quickly though.
I used to sort by genre but gave up probably 6-ish years ago, so now about half of my games are sorted by genre and the other half sorted alphabetically
its a mess

Recently I've not been a fan of the gameplay categories. There's no consistency to them and games can fit into multiple at a time. The original goal was to put every game into only one category so they didn't become to big, but now I find some games should be in different categories than I originally decided. Then there's shit like "RPG - Story Focused" and "RPG - Turn Based" as though a turn based RPG couldn't be story focused.
The current gameplay categories are arbitrary and more useless than I had hoped. I've been trying to find a suitable replacement for a while.
Mine's personalized and simple
FAVORITES - Games I like and still play from time to time
RECENT - New games that I played recently or am still trying to complete
PLAN - Games I will try, soon-ish (usually empty)
BESTS - Some of the highest quality or memorable games I've played
RELIC - Great games that doesn't fit into BESTS
PLAYED - Finished and tossed aside
GAMES (unsorted) - Haven't play and don't care
I don't sort by genre because I don't bother with anything below awesome after playing them, and awesome isn't limited by the style of game.
+Beaten <anything i wont play again>
+Unwanted shit <anything i didn't as for>
+Games <uncategorized stuff>
+VR <just because>

i just favorite the few games i play and i dont really look at the rest
Tier 0: Playpocalypse Now
Tier 1: Play these games now
Tier 2: Play these games soon
Tier 3: Finish these games sometime
Tier 4: Other installed games
Everything else
Tried this to get me to play games I've been meaning to. Haven't felt like doing much gaming at all recently so I can't tell if it works.

I don't really care much about achievements, but there are a few games where there's only a few left, where I think "eh, why not complete these some day".
"Doesn't count" is for duplicate stuff (like Divinity Original Sin Classic vs Divinity Original Sin) or stuff that doesn't work anymore (Dark Messiah multiplayer).
"Games" is just anything I haven't started yet.
After publisher or game franchise or if too obscure, genre.
I don't. My library is just a massive dumpster, sorted alphabetically.

Games For Life : These are obviously the best of the best, games
that I find to be very memorable and ones that I will definitely turn back to every year or so.
Good Games : These aren't bad games nor are they perfect games but they fit the bill of a well built game or expierence
that I can play and enjoy.
Guilty Pleasures : This list is an enigma, in which emotions are very conflicted depending on what day you ask me. These are games
that I really shouldn't like or that I shouldn't admit that I like, but I do have some allotment of care left in them to not outright dump it into the comming 3 or so lists.
I Exists Too, I guess.. : This list is primarily a repository for a lot of multiplayer games or otherwise games I don't have any real interest in playing anytime soon, but somehow make it into my library anyways.
Play me, Please? : Self-Explanatory list of games that I want to play but haven't gotten around to playing. ( I've got a lot of catching up to do.. :-o )
The Cubby Hole : This is a box, I might play the games in it again, it's possible. maybe..
Uncle, Uncle! : These are BAD games, DEAD games, or games with a really bad reputation and they are in my library. ( Help! )
VR : I never asked this, never sought this genre out and now it's a new tumor that I cannot cut out. ( Thanks, GabeN. )
