I believe it also supports Crossplay with the Windows Store version.
Basically fuck Sony.
I'm really impressed with Minecraft's ability to be this massive colossal multi-console giant that has two concurrent versions going, with one being a total code re-write, and yet seemingly completely stagnate in terms of gameplay and content. So like, I haven't really been into minecraft for years, so maybe I'm talking out of my ass, but so much of that trailer looked like the exact same shit I had been doing years ago. "What happened to minecrafts ambitious goals" isn't exactly a hot take these days, but uh, what happened to minecrafts ambitious goals?
This post made me want to look up whats coming in the next update, seems to be water focused 1.13 – Official Minecraft Wiki https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/108621/e2d58cc1-1de6-4f25-85e9-352ca11e8308/image.png
I haven't played minecraft in ages and vanilla in even longer, but from what I gather from news etc the base game has plenty of content to keep casual players happy; as such they moved to more interesting things like putting it on different consoles and crossplatform play, while people who want more content rely on mods
They have separate dev teams for the console/Windows Store stuff.
Seems fair enough, it's pretty impressive to see minecraft now a cross-play enabled multi-platform title. The game certainly couldn't evolve forever, but still, I feel this weird twinge of sadness when I think about Notch's lofty dreams for the game. Minecraft basically created it's own genre so good on it, but as someone who was basically playing since day one it looks like it just stopped somewhere along the development cycle and just decided to stay put there. I'm pretty sure I just described the 1.0 release, but I digress. I don't mean to shit on the game too much.
Reading the page for 1.3 actually has me excited, having more stuff to do under water sounds great. Also they added Dolphins, so 10/10
Minecraft's only problem is it's novelty has worn off both for individuals who've put dozens of hours into it and for the industry as a whole which have aped it's base gameplay and have given it more depth and interesting mechanics in the form of other games.
All I want from Minecraft, is something to do during the grind between starting out, and getting enough Materials to go to interesting areas. Fill that shit up with some kool shit, let me do some Magic, something Technology related, that doesn't require me to Grind 10 years for. FTB is what I want, but it's not portable.
Any entertainment that's popular enough is going to be consumed on basis of sheer exposure, rather than depth or quality
Minecraft has always been an on/off game for me. Though I wish they'd do something substantial with the actual mining part of the game. Some underground biomes and new things to mine maybe some new fossils) would add a lot to what is probably the most dull part of the game. It's been mostly untouched since the beta (other than fossils).
I haven't played this game in ages! There was a time when I was so hype for it though that I bought it on everything. My phone, my xbox, my playstation (console and handheld), even the Wii U version when it came out! I was hooked! Now I log in and I look around and I close it. Sometimes I wish there was a machine that could wipe specific memories like experiencing a game so I can play it in the same amazement I did back in InDev times.

Minecraft has been in a state of perpetual feature creep since mid-beta.
I totally thought that was Michelle Obama in the thumbnail.
At the end of the day it's not about competition but allowing anyone to play the same game together.
I dunno, there are lots of games that have way more features than Minecraft, but I always end up coming back to Minecraft as my 3D art toy. I'm currently a couple dozen hours into a 1.8.9 world and I'm making a kickass base in a hollowed out mountain spire. I don't care too much for the progression, I'm here for the architecture, but I don't use creative mode as I actually like that every block has to be sourced. The architecture is driving my exploration of other areas, too. E.G. I wanted nether quartz for my master bedroom and that drove me to explore the nether. I want some blocks from ocean temples, too, so I'm scouring the oceans for one. It's just a really pleasant gameplay loop for me.
I just hope Microsoft doesn't backtrack on this in the future if they regain the lead on console sales. Remember they turned Sony down on crossplay in the 360/PS3 era.
hahaha fuck you sony
It's a decent survival and creative game, but it's also complex enough that if you want to, you can build legitimate working hard drives, digital clocks, even a working fucking Atari emulator. It's the perfect base platform to market and sell to everyone on everything, and open enough to let modders and the community do the legwork for content, and let the players choose how they want to play. It's kind of perfect in its own way
I'd shift that forward to since 1.8 beta. Sure pistons and what not could probably be called that but 1.8 beta is where they went balls to the walls nuts on it.
It would be awesome to see more xbox x nintendo games in the future. Imagine the potential if two studios collaborated on a game for both consoles.
Sigh, wish something like Warframe was multiplatform. As a coop game it would be perfect for it.
The thing is though, minecraft doesn't need many interesting mechanics or depth, and is extremely successful for its simplicity. It's still basically one of the most popular games in the world and is something kids especially play all the time.
The 360 was PowerPC.
I mean Xbox has only just recently put their first party titles on PC. The 360 era was run quite differently than it is now. Phil Spencer as done a ton of good when he was put in charge of Xbox.
Honestly I still load up Minecraft from time to time and the snapshots of the latest update a really cool, you can find abandoned ships in ice biomes now. I just wish they put in more means of transport aside from boats, horses and grinding for yoinks to get a pair of wings that break after a while.
As long as the game is roughly the same client, the point of netcode is to basically abstract what's going on and move it over wires; there's no reason (generally speaking) that the client can't be running on a X360, PS3, or PC.
