If gaming news must be posted in GGD, please make it a child forum, so people trying to look for game threads can disable the news subforum if they don't want to see it.
I've spoken to garry about this, we're going to leave it for the weekend, see how it goes and re-evaluate it next week.
One problem I have with a "news" child forum existing is that it would defeat the purpose of the child forum filtering feature that was recently added, since "news" is itself a child forum.
Some ideas:
- If a "news" child forum was added, I think it would best supplement a feature that would allow threads to exist in multiple child forums. For example, a Nintendo-related news article could exist in both "mario" and "news" so that filtering still works as normal.
- Make a "Gaming News" subforum and leave the other one as "Gaming General" or something along those lines
I would like the automatic bot posts in a child forum. We can choose which subforums display now, so if someone wants them they can keep them showing.
It might be better for the subforum display default behavior to still be none, very few people are using the main gaming forum because by default its very cluttered.
"I moved 4 threads from SH to Film and TV so I don't think it's going to make a massive difference in the long run."
4 threads from the time you started it, give it a few months, there'll be a shit ton more threads.
"I don't understand the example you're using. You say that you visit the Film section regularly but later say that you won't get to see Star Wars threads because you don't w'ant to go to the film section."
"It's very simple, if you're interested in films (Star Wars, Star Trek, whatever) you should look in the relevant forum for news, debate and discussion for your area of interest."
That is why I said I was using a Hyperbolic Example.
Hyperbole - "exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally."
"SH was never intended to be a general dumping ground for news of all types. It was always meant to be for general news, examples of which I've given in a previous post."
I can see this but the problem here Hezzy, is that this has NEVER been stated before.
No rules mentioning it, no Mods, not even Garry mentioning it.
And clearly if it was such a big deal, this would have happened years ago because SH has been the news dumping ground for 9 years already.
Why wait 9 years to actually enforce the purpose of a subsection?
You guys revised the rules, revised the subsections, revised the forum so many times during those 9 years, and none of you, not even Garry, mentioned ANYTHING about SH not being a dumping ground.
Its a solution to a nonexistant problem. I think this issue is a great represntation of the disconnect between users and management.
Honestly I believe in what Hezzy's trying to do but at this point it's bringing up more problems than it's solving. Even if everyone was apparently using SH incorrectly, I would personally think of a solution that doesn't involve forcing people to change their habits.
Having the news in a separate child forum would make it easier to actually check the news, right now if you want to see what's going on in the gaming world (without actually leaving this site) you have to look inside this one big subforum and scroll past all the not-news threads you most likely have already seen/ not care about, making it both annoying and easy to miss something potentially interesting.
Having one coherent more or less chronological list would make that process much more pleasant.
Besides, we already have a bunch of stuff categorized in subforums (some imo less needed than others) so why mix news with general discussion threads?
The big issue for me is that I now have to visit three forums - SH, GGD, and Film & TV - to get all my news and that really sucks.
why fix that which aint broken lol
The major con is that like the PCGamer bot showed us it only takes one bot to flood the forum. What about when we have 3 or 4? What about if there's 20+ like we used to have?
I think the news node should be kept as it was. Automated bot news is great and I used the forum a lot, but it shouldn't be flooding out user created content.
Tbh a lot of what PCGamer posts is just sponsored product shite anyway, i'd be inclined to just axe that particular bot regardless of how things go with child news forum or not.
Anything from bots should be able to be filtered out. Bots tend to post a good amount of trivial stuff that the average poster wouldn't bother posting. Being able to avoid that flooding out other threads would be good.
News bots should be in the news node like before. sigh guess we'll deal with this anyway.
