The first big change since the microsoft acquisition? https://blog.github.com/2018-06-18-announcing-github-for-unity-1.0/
I don't know why anyone would use this. Is it instead of using the actual git client?
I have been using Github Desktop together with Unity for a while which has worked fine. Always had to fiddle around with the file structure a bit in the beginning but I manage. Seems like the only real advantages is not having to initially fiddle with the files, easier diff checking and just overall more functions available within the editor. I'll probably prefer this new Github for Unity thing in the long run, for now I'll stick with what I already have.
Don't see the point except a quicker way to set up git lfs
Locking files is one feature that's not in git. Pretty useful for Unity when working in a team.
Probably just another gimmick
File Locking · git You're not wrong, as this is an extension to git that needs you to install what amounts to an extension to the client (if you're just using the plain CLI git client).
