Newly-released police body camera footage shows the moment a Wichita, Kansas police officer opened fire on a dog, causing a nine-year-old girl to be struck in the face by a bullet fragment. On Thursday, Sedgwick County District Attorney Marc Bennett released body camera footage from a Dec. 30 domestic disturbance call. Officers went to the family’s home when the girl’s mother reported her husband was threatening to hurt himself. According to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s office, a fragment from one of the rounds struck the girl just above her eye. Both the girl and the dog were treated and later released. Her identity has not been released.
Pretty fucked up, there's a video on the website luckily you can't really see anything
What an idiot of an officer, glad they are no longer on the force.
US police seriously need to chill the fuck out. It's like it's dominated by megalomaniacs
Title is a bit misleading, the bullet didn't hit the child. It was a fragment. While that's still pretty bad, it doesn't mean that the officer shot directly at the child. Instead he shot at the dog and by pure chance a fragment hit the child.
What a fucking moron. He shot a dog that was barking aggressively at him.
You don't fire your weapon that close to 3 fucking children. Especially when its a miniature bull terrier which is as small as a wiener dog. Its like saying a chiwawa is a threat.
I don't agree with the decision to fire at all. But the title gives the impression that he shot a kid in the face.
"But in the police they train you to shoot to kill, not shoot to injure!!!!" https://fi.somethingawful.com/safs/smilies/3/6/blastu.002.gif
The bullet hit the child. If one of your sperm fertilises an egg, you're still the father
Poor guy, the guilt must be impossible to live with. While he didn't directly shoot at her he is still the one to blame 100%. Shittiest luck there is it could just as well not have hit at all.

As someone with two dogs I'd be extremely reluctant to call the police to my house, cause it seems that it's SOP to just shoot animals on sight. It's absurd to think that when someone calls the cops nowadays, the cops are potentially just as much of a threat to them as the fucking criminals, and yet here we are. People love to complain about police militarization whenever some local PD gets a hand-me-down MRAP, but I'm 1,000 times more concerned about the delusional attitude that jackboot motherfuckers like this have, where they think they they're soldiers making kind of heroic last stand against the hordes of barbarians at the gate, necessary to keep total anarchy at bay. Where the community they're supposed to protect is nothing more than a big collection of possible enemy targets to them, who need to be eliminated with violence. Law enforcement in the United States needs a complete and total institutional overhaul, but with the way things are going in this place, I can only foresee it getting worse, not better.
Imagine being someone covered head to toe in body armor, armed to the teeth with weapons, fearing for your life from a common household pet that is surrounded by children. What a god damn joke.
Personally I think the fact that the dog was treated and released is even more scary - if you're shooting that close to a nine-year old and you don't even kill your main target, it's only by pure chance that things didn't go even worse. Glad he was fired, and by god I hope he ends up in jail.
womp womp
Dang 3 years older and we'd have /r/TF2 mod blaming the kid for being so close to the dog when there was a gun present.
The kid's screams are fucking haunting. And while I get that it was a tense situation that cop seems extremely triggerhappy. Barely a second had passed since the dog started barking (and he knew it was there, it was called fucking 5 seconds earlier) before he fired 3 times despite bystanders being both to the sides ánd BEHIND the target.
Head to toe in body armor? Armed to the teeth? He had a handgun and a ceramic plate/kevlar vest. This is a police officer not a US Marine in the field. I get what you're trying to say but like Police aren't walking tanks.
Just to get back on the part about the breed: Even small dogs can be dangerous. While I don't believe this dog was dangerous in this situation, the breed could definitely seriously hurt or kill a person. A little reminder that Dachshunds and Yorkshire terriers are responsible for just as many deaths in the US as Doberman pinschers. Regardless, I believe the officer should have taken the risk of being attacked by a dog over shooting near children.
He literally proceeded to tell her to get the fuck out and get back. The fuck is your major malfunction?
She didn't have a gun to defend herself, that's a big no-no
Honestly that's the closest thing to an upside of this whole mess. He had absolutely no reason to draw and fire at all, it's only sheer dumb luck that his reckless behavior didn't kill anyone or anything.
Hurr statistics are dumb. Regardless of what YOU think, even the smaller breeds are capable of inflicting serious injury. This breed was by no means small and could be dangerous. Once again, this particular dog wasn't aggressive.
I'm able to put myself in someone else shoes and acknowledge how shitty he must be feeling? Let me ask what your fucking malfunction is? Yes he is an idiot beyond words and yes this is his fault. His intention and goal was not to shoot a girl in the face can we be clear of that? Doesn't mean that he can't regret it when the adrenaline has left his body and living with that regret for the rest of his life will be unbearable. I did not watch the video, I don't have that morbid curiosity.
Then don't mouth off and don't make presumptions about me just because you're an ass that doesn't fully confirm what you're talking about. He immediately proceeds to take the hard line with her. "get away, get out!" Are you Fucking kidding me? Why are you even trying to play that card? I informed myself about what happened. What did you do? Get off your moral pedestal.
Maybe taker a breather and be nice? No need for aggressive accusations. I find it curious that you would react this hostile when the only thing I said was that I did not watch the video. I don't like that kind of stuff. I never belittled anyone who watched it. Also why exactly can't I comment if I only read the article? It doesn't change my statement on the matter. Mindless bandwagon hating isn't what we are here for and I'm not taking his side, nor am I devaluing what he has done. I simply stated that being in his shoes must be one of the worst experiences and if he isn't a total psychopath he will have a very, very difficult time from now on. Both mentally and socially. People seem to forget that we are all human and that this story only has people who lost.
You've clearly never had a miniature dachsund. We did. Little guy was friendly for the most part, but if he didn't like you, he REALLY didn't like you, and wasn't afraid to show it no matter what you did.
Another story from America that shows how fucked up it is still.
like?
man US police is wack as hell
