Republicans are all sorts of fucked up, aren't they? Who knew nearly half of Americans were ethnonationalistic fascists?
Much easier to shove your head up your own ass than admit you supported a fascist.
Warning, parts of this article are absolutely infuriating, especially with the immigration bullshit going on right now.
“All nuance and all complexity — and these are complex issues — are completely lost,” she said, describing “overblown” reactions from the president’s critics
“But when they’re hounding him all the time it just gets old. Give the guy a little.”
Nuance and complexity from Trump supporters? give me a fucking break, if you legitimately support his actions after the immigrant shit, in my eyes you're no better than the fascist sympathizers that crawled out of the woodwork to support Nazism during world war 2. It's disturbing enough that ICE used the "just following orders" excuse, but allowing this moron to remain any longer in office will tear america apart completely.
Cute that they say that in defense of a president whose policy is the very same equivalent of "overblown [reactions]" where it just so happens that "all nuance and all complexity - and these are complex issues — are completely lost.” Wow! It's almost as if people are having extreme reactions to policy that itself is also extreme and lacking in nuanced addressing of complicated issues! Who'd have thought! 😲
Iranian hostage crisis
The crisis quickly became the subject of international and domestic attention, and Carter vowed to secure the release of the hostages. He refused the Iranian demand of the return of Pahlavi in exchange for the release of the hostages. His approval ratings rose as Americans rallied around his response, but the crisis became increasingly problematic for his administration as it continued.[156] In an attempt to rescue the hostages, Carter launched Operation Eagle Claw in April 1980. The operation was a total disaster, and it ended in the death of eight American soldiers. The failure of the operation strengthened Ayatollah Khomenei's position in Iran and badly damaged Carter's domestic standing.[157] Carter was dealt another blow when Vance, who had consistently opposed the operation, resigned.[158] Iran refused to negotiate the return of the hostages until Iraq launched an invasion in September 1980 With Algeria serving as an intermediary, negotiations continued until an agreement was reached in January 1981. In return for releasing the 52 captives, Iran accepted over $7 billion in monetary compensation and the unfreezing of Iranian assets in the United States. Iran waited to release the captives until hours after Carter left office on January 20, 1981.[159]
40% of the country started a civil war over slavery.
The scary thing about Trump's supporters is that they are so utterly and completely brainwashed, North Koreans look enlightened by comparison.
When they spout their untruths, in their mind they are not actually lying. They really aren't -- they fully believe the things they let out of their mouths. Can it really be considered a lie if the person in question is utterly and totally convinced of the truth of their own statements?
While looking at the json files of the Trump subreddits, I happened to come across a thread whose subject looked rather familiar.
It was a Trump supporter telling others that they should have more honest and open discussion with the left, saying something along the lines of "while the deep state democrats are trying to destroy America, the left as a whole is not all bad, we should stop dehumanizing each other" and that Americans should aim to close the divide in the country.
It was the mirror image of the debate thread that was recently posted on this very subforum. It was a surreal experience to see, to say the least, but it made me come to the realization that these people have been assaulted by propaganda for so long that they really do believe that they are making America better and that they are fighting the enemy that is trying to destroy their country.
Considering this, how in the nine circles of hell are you ever going to fix this divide? The United States of America might as well be two different countries at this point.
1% actually. The confederacy was propped up by the obscenely wealthy who had the most to lose.
The country's had a sort of "issue" since it was created. It boils down to "should I place my happiness over other peoples" This ideology is part of American conservatism, and a form of it, slavery, caused the worst
war in the country's history.
This time even average people will fervently defend the bad side this time through fuckin facebook memes.
Funny how Hillary was right all along. A basket of deplorables the lot of them are.
Democrats aren't going to flip these people, but we know they are outnumbered. Get the base and the independents out, and they will lose.
She was factually correct but not politically correct.
Not really, we always had our differences but they were regional. With the age of information and the emergence of partisan propaganda networks, those differences were exacerbated and spread to the individual level.
In the full quote, she was actually only saying that about half of Trump supporters are 'deplorable', the other half are just fed up with political bullshit and that the Dems should target them
Whether that's still true today, I dunno
Most southerners outside Appalachia had aspirations of becoming slaveowners if they weren't already. The Confederacy may not have truly served these people, but they were still pro-slavery.
It's all about marketing. Kinda like that video Dave Jones did on his "Zero Carbon Emissions" vacuum cleaner. People who are smart enough to know that's ridiculous won't buy into it for that reason, but those who are ignorant will eat it up.
Honestly, today I think her quote is wrong. It's probably more than half.
Also for the whole "give a little leeway" thing, there were a couple of very easy PR slam dunks, and he either fucked that up, or did the slam dunk on the opposite side. I don't want to bring it up, but would they do the same to Hillary if she did half of the things Trump did? Would those supporters of Hillary Clinton tell everyone "stop being sexist" or "give her a chance" if she fucked up the emergency response to Puerto Rico, or said there were fine people on both sides during a violent rally? I think we know the answer would be no, the people who voted for her wouldn't defend her if she any of those things.
the fun/infuriating part is that they'd actually hate the things and policies he's done if someone else did them.
I think in terms of statistical analysis in this thread it is important to underscore what portion of the population is being discussed.
According to Gallup, 29 percent of Americans identify as Democrat. 27 percent identify as Republican. Within this 27% subgroup, 90% support trump. The remaining 42% identify as independent.
