The Biggest Driving Mistakes and Bad Habits - savagegeese

I see several of these things on my drive to work every day.
There’s a 20 minute stretch of road between two towns where there are no overtaking opportunities during peak hour, and if even one car is doing 15km/h below the speed limit (in fine conditions), then everyone in that lane is slowed down and stacked up behind each other. And when everyone is stacked up it’s very unsafe, because no one is adhering to the 3 second gap rule. If everyone was travelling at the speed limit, everyone would be maintaining a safer gap.
I have to merge onto a 110km/h motorway every day. The on-ramp is downhill to facilitate accelerating up to the speed limit before the merging point, but despite that, many people still try to merge while going only 60km/h. Some people even come to a dead stop at the merging point. It’s extremely unsafe for everyone when there’s such a huge speed differential between traffic on the motorway and the merging lane.
People on the motorway not keeping left unless overtaking (camping in the right-hand lane, remember Australia drives on the left, so opposite to US). Not only that, some people won’t even travel at the speed limit while in the overtaking lane. It causes cars to stack up, refer to point 1, but cars driving side-by-side at such high speeds is also quite dangerous too.
Last week a taxi came to a dead stop on a 70km/h road, but they were still half in the lane, half off of the road. It was completely unexpected (no traffic lights or side streets nearby), the road was wet and downhill, and they weren’t even indicating. If I didn’t veer off of the road at the last second, I would have rear-ended them. I concede I should have maintained a larger gap, but the taxi shouldn’t have created the situation in the first place.
sorry for the rant but I hate bad driving habits
The "Pull out on a green light then stop in the middle of the intersection" routine happens to me at the corner near where I live and it pushes me over the line every single time even though I should be expecting it. I have no idea how or why people do this. You are already in the middle of the intersection. Why are you stopping? What are you looking for?
I see people all the fucking time ride the on ramp till the very end and then basically use their car as a shield to force themselves into traffic, causing massive backups behind them. Shit makes my piss boil when people just wait till the last minute before forcing their car onto you to let their dumb ass over.
One woman just fucking near clipped my front bumper by pulling out in front of me at an entrance/exit to a gas station while smiling and waving at me like I had let her in going the speed limit with a 5 sec gap between the car in front of me.
The "Pulling out in front and not speeding up" happens way too often for my liking with all the back roads I take.
It's even worse when they seem like they'll wait for me and then decide at the last second that they should get in front of me because they see another car coming up behind me even when another doesn't show up behind them. It's almost like they think they'll be sitting there forever.
Some of these "mistakes" aren't really mistakes, but annoyances
Like, the speed limit, is just that, a limit. Not a minimum speed. People should drive as fast as they feel comfortable, even if it's a bit slow. It's discourteous yes, but if it reduces the amount of wrecks I'm all for it.
Same thing for slowing down for every turn. If you feel like your car can't take it at that speed, then it's better to be safe than sorry. Even if it causes annoyances for the people behind you.
Also, the left-lane thing, at least on two lane highways, isn't always a mistake. Your next turn might be on the left, and it's a lot better to pre-plan that lane so you don't have to worry about merging at the last minute (which can cause an accident) On freeways, there's no real excuse, as there's usually not a left turn that uses the left lane.
I think, going by his footage, he is mostly talking about highways. Riding the left to turn doesn't seem like something he would find mistaken.
Yeah this is the one that I don't feel gets mentioned enough. Everyone will complain about getting cut off or people doing sudden changes of direction without indicating but few people consider their spacing. My dad likes to ride peoples asses and it makes me nervous as fuck every time. Then you have the people who ride you while you are doing 50 in a 45.
Driving at a slower speed increases wrecks actually, due to more road rage and people pulling dangerous maneuvers to get around the slow fuck. My state even has a min speed limit to prevent people like that from fucking up traffic.
But people driving slower than traffic can easily cause accidents
People driving slow in the fast lane cause accidents and traffic jams when people have to react to a person being in the way
Under some cirucmstances, you're probably right there's very little issue with driving slow, but under most road circumstances that I'm familiar with, driving slower than the bulk of traffic causes traffic accidents and issues that ripple down the line.
I find it telling that this person complaints almost entirely about slowpoke grandmas, and has nothing to say about tailgaters, people who refuse to let others merge, and people who dash their car around like they're on a skateboard.
Hell, why isn't texting mentioned?
In most places if you're going a significant amount below the speed limit you'll at least get the police giving you a word if they see.
The idea that slower is inherently safer when driving is ridiculous. Driving at 45KPH in a 60 KPH area means anyone coming up behind you will have to slow down pretty quickly if they don't notice you're slow ass, which can cause accidents. Not to mention the traffic build up. You should always drive at or near the speed limit.
Driving slower isn't always safer. Last year I switched lanes from the (slightly slower than normal speed) lane to the right lane, which was at a complete fucking dumbcunt had came to a dead stop (in the middle of a major interchange) and a i ran up the back of him. The most important thing about driving is being predictable.
On highways, and freeways, definitely. That's why there's a minimum speed. But on rural roads it's less of an issue, as you shouldn't be going speeds where it's hard to react.
That's also why you set up buffer zones for yourself while driving, and why it's an issue when people just jump into it.
For some reason people treat merging into thier lane like you're trying to fuck thier daughter.
Don't notice any of these here commonly. Especially the outer lane for overtaking, that's pretty well understand as far as I have encountered.
We have a thing where in rush hour the hard shoulder becomes an extra driving lane to relief congestion. But too many people are reluctant to use it and then clog up the middle lane. Seeing as we aren't allowed to overtake on the right, you now have to switch 2 lanes to overtake these muppets.
Outside of residential areas where lmao fucking do not do this
it's insanely annoying when people don't go 5mph over the speed limit
it allows traffic to flow much faster when you go a mere 5mph over and allows for adjustments to be made under that without going under the limit
unfortunately some people are just dumb selfish cunts so even if you have common sense shit burned into their retinas they'll still choose not to do it.
rental cars, new drivers, drivers who don’t have experience with the road they are travelling on n, etc are all valid reasons for being more cautious than usual on curves.
But I can agree on taking very shallow curves slowly being annoying
People not using turn signals, driving to slow/fast are among the reasons I detest driving.
Pet peeve of mine, drivers that don't put a light signal in a roundabout, people that drive way too fast in a roundabout, and that asshole behind you that horn just because drivers don't put there blinkers on while you are waiting in a roundabout.
Or even worse, people who actually stop while in the circle to let cars waiting on the road to pass them
Every single person that does this deserves to have their license suspended, it's fucking retarded. It's even worse when they do it to let me pass, when if they just fucking drove I would have gone anyways just as quickly.
The entire point is to have a constant flow of cars moving through it, allowing
In many US states the left lane is designated for passing only, and even in instances where someone is grossly breaking the speed limit it is still your responsibility to get out of their way.
Driving has been a complete nightmare for me ever since moving from the South to California. Nobody in all of socal seems to understands that the left lanes aren't for farting along. They're specifically made for passing and clearing faster drivers.
Coming to a complete stop on a 2 lane highway with a 70mph speed limit to make a left turn
People not signalling/not communicating on a roundabout are the worst. Feels like almost the majority don't bother where I live.
What do you mean by allowing traffic to flow much faster? A going 5mph faster than the limit isn't exactly gonna save anyone any significant amount of time.
it isn't going to save some insane amount of time, but everyone goes at least 5mph where I live and no one gets pulled over for it. It definitely noticeably helps.
The speed limit sometimes definitely feels lower than it actually should be. There are a few pretty long roads that are only 35mph but in reality should be 40-45 at most, with some of them being really shitty speed traps.
Again, define "noticeably helps"
Traffic would flow just as smooth if everyone went exactly the speed limit too. So the only difference I see is time based?
Though now that I think about it I guess it's different in America since long stretches of empty road at 35 is retarded, but on Euro roads at least I'm very agitated by people who overtake me at speed limit + 10 km/h only for me to just pull up behind/next to them at the next turn. In here at least it's a complete waste of everyone's nerves and doesn't help traffic flow or go faster or anything.
My favorite thing is dense city traffic where you're signaling that you're going to parallel park, there's an open space, you go to reverse into it, and the car behind you stays like a foot away from your rear bumper the whole time so you can't back up into the space, even though you've been clearly signalling you were going to park for plenty long enough for them to give you some room to back in. That's why the taxis will just stop in the road sometimes, they know that's the only way to get people to stop.
I despise people who brake for no reason.
Like, I'm behind someone doing some speed, in a straight line, and they start braking. I look in front of them, theres literaly nothing there, they're just braking for no reason. For fuck sakes, why are you braking? Is it the limit?
Oh, and the speed limits...
I'll be honest, I do NOT respect the speed limits at all. I am an asshole in what comes to speed limits. But IMO, probably wrong but still, the speed limits are nightmares.
Here in Portugal, we got highways almost as wide as US highways. Theres some stretches of road that have either two or three lanes, and they aren't narrow at all. You could almost fit two medium sized cars in one lane, so you can see how big they are. I'd say you could fit like 10 cars side by side from the side of the lane to the center, easily. On top of that, you don't get too much traffic until you get to city outskirts. You'll never see cars clumping up a lot, so you'll always see a car here and there, maybe two closer to each other, and nothing else. And to add up to that, these aren't bad roads either, they're pretty new, no potholes and have a pretty smooth but traction rich tarmac.
Despite this, the speed limit is 120km/h. Why the hell is the speed limit 120km/h when the roads are so fucking big and safe? I mean, you'd have a point if they were narrow, badly paved, and always full of traffic, but they're soo far away from that, its mental. Look at the AutoBahn, the only vehicles that can't go over speed limits are buses or any other vehicle with a trailer. Theres an advised speed, but it isn't enforceable, unless if you get into an accident. So it's basicaly a "do it at your own risk" situation.
Either way, 120 is too low of a speed. And 50km/h within the outskirts of a city is absolute snoresville. I'm not even asking for no speed limits, I'm just asking for a slight raise.
I drive a semi, and my biggest pet peeve is people whole merge into my lane, right smack dab in front of me and slow down. I'm driving a 80,000 death machine, give me some fucking room to breath. Same with those who like to follow my ass or stay on my sides, It wouldn't take much for the tractor or the trailor to kill you.
