• "Play of the Game" as a game design choice

I like learning about game design every once in a while so this is a question that has me wondering. Assuming you are able to produce a system that accurately snapshots a POTG in a given competitive match, is the concept itself an overall good or bad thing to include in your games? To be more specific, what are advantages and disadvantages of the concept of POTG? From my perspective, it certainly seems like it fuels people to play more in order to get chosen for a POTG, but it might accidentally encourage an unhealthy mindset when playing the game in general. Hopefully other people can explain it better than I can.
As long as you can skip it you get the best from both worlds.
