The self-funded event was held at the opulent Hofburg palace in Vienna and included a choral performance of the nation's anthem, an official oath, and a video message from Russian cosmonaut Oleg Artemiev on the International Space Station. So what is Asgardia, who is the man behind it, and why are thousands of people signing up to be part of it? Here's what you need to know. Asgardia is the brainchild of Russian rocket scientist Igor Ashurbeyli. He wants it to be the first fully independent "nation" in space, with its own government, virtual currency, justice system and calendar. In 2016, Dr Ashurbeyli and a team of scientists, engineers and law experts unveiled plans to establish an Asgardian colony on the Moon, and to build a series of special space platforms, called Space Arks, where people can live. Artists' impressions of the Space Arks show giant, clear-domed platforms floating through space with people walking through Earth-like neighbourhoods inside. While functioning as a real nation, Asgardia would also help protect the Earth and keep the peace in space, according to the project's official website. At the moment, anyone can become a citizen of Asgardia. But Dr Ashurbeyli has said he wants to attract the world's most creative minds, and may eventually bring in a mandatory IQ test for potential Asgardians. More than 200,000 people have already signed up via the nation's website, including thousands of Australians, but Dr Ashurbeyli wants to recruit a total population of about 150 million within the next 10 years. It has a long way to go and many hurdles ahead of it, but Dr Ashurbeyli has made some impressive progress since its inception. He launched the nation's first satellite, called Asgardia-1, last year and plans to expand that to a "constellation" of satellites by 2019. He's also established a parliament made up of dozens of MPs, who met for the first time ahead of the inauguration ceremony in Vienna.
The new Bioshock is looking good
I've always wanted to live on a Russian Talos-1!

this sounds like a bunch of people who have no experience with fiction tries their hand at fiction while remaining optimistic that they ain't no nerds fantasizing not real stuff.
Man this could sum up just about any ambitious project or anything involving far reaching technology. Not being abreast in the what could happens or cautionary tales. Especially those writing legislation for said far reaching technology.
He's making the Spacers from Brigador a reality. http://brigador.wikia.com/wiki/Spacers
Isn't that pretty much exactly what he did? Hell, he was even from Russia originally Andrew Ryan | BioShock Wiki | FANDOM powered by Wikia
Russian billionaire declares himself leader of new '"space nation" Asgardia Trump: Holy shit, we need some kind of... space force.
generally you want to wait until you actually have a space station or something before you declarr space independence
This sound more like System Shock and BioShock in same time with maybe Postcyberpunk setting instead. But regardless for now, his "Asgardia" is just typical Micronation seeing it's own Wikipedia page. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asgardia_(nation)
He should pour his money into space elevators or similar tech first because getting all the raw materials (and people) up there is going to be a massive hurdle.
Someone on wikipedia really likes micronations because they get pages as soon as they're announced.
Might be Lunacy now, but give it take 40-90 years. Stations, asteroid bases, societies that can become self-sustaining in Space can might as well become their own nations/civilizations.
Sociopathic objectivists, fundamentalist jingoistic racists, and now space nerds. One hell of a trilogy
Or Genocratic-like Technocrat wannabes as that "Asgardian" guy seemly want.
Dr Ashurbeyli has said he wants to attract the world's most creative minds, and may eventually bring in a mandatory IQ test for potential Asgardians. To be fair...
Fuck it - I signed up.
Well, at least you won't have to worry about gulags any more than shadow aliens...
they made that, it's called Prey
Or more people interested in Micronations in general like political fandom.
Another day in 'Jersey.
What the fuck am I reading here
Isnt this the plot of like 35 different Gundam series?
The fuck is that picture.
Cast your votes to elect garry as supreme leader of OIFY station
It's the best part of the whole thing. The old lady is holding god damn balloons with her hand fully in her pocket with the string merely clipping through her jacket.
And that fucking background. Even if you have zero idea of how lighting works, it looks so stupidly off. And the path just stops at the big wall.
