Any tips for running a new serious and darkrp server.

Okay yeah I know what everyone's going to say "Don't", because I agree the community is like a cancer that sort of just consumed the entire body but refuses to die like Deadpool or something.
Regardless, I was feeling nostalgic lately so I said fuck it, why not host a server. Always wanted to as a kid and I think I'd dislike most serious RP servers nowadays, so maybe I could make one work out alright. Someone also suggested to me that I make a DarkRP server as that's still big apparently (its been a bit) and can rake in some money. The hope (and I know it's a bit out there) is I could make a serious RP server that I run myself and have someone help me run a DarkRP server with the goal of both being high quality but the DarkRP one somehow raking enough money in to cover server costs.
I was wondering if any of y'all had any suggestions for both. I've been in the community for a while now so I can already imagine most of the basic issues (though I never really played that much DarkRP), but I wanted to hear if anyone had some unique input or wanted to tell me why my idea is shit.
Last time something like this happened with Facepunch talking about HL2RP it almost ended up with a Facepunch server, maybe that can finally happen, eh?
Honestly, "serious" and DarkRP never mash up together well, since DarkRP always felt like more of a fun, light-hearted, fuck-around gamemode and a lot of people seem to think so. I wouldn't say it's not possible to run a serious one, but I think you'd have to modify it to such a point where it wouldn't be DarkRP anymore. You'd have better luck running a Clockwork-based gamemode like HL2RP or Cider Two like you said and work it out from there on.
It'd be two separate servers. Serious HL2RP and a light hearted Dark RP.
You shouldn't separate your potential playerbase by offering two servers right off the bat. You should try to figure out what's the current demand and what people would like to play right now - for example, me myself, I wasn't able to find a HL2RP server who didn't have absurd P2W donation perks, with OOC and PM locked out to non-donators, or having to pay to play roles like the Metropolice Force. I'm sure that a lot of people would like to play a no-bullshit HL2RP server that doesn't make you pay for things that were already for everyone in the base gamemode, but like I said, you need to figure out what people want, or what'd be neat, so forth and so on.
And last time I checked, there was like thousands of DarkRP servers. You'd have to work very hard to make it stand out to other people, and unless you are very creative or know LUA, It'll be really difficult to do so.
Yeah I agree. Maybe I'll just corner down on the Serious RP server and hope to make the money from donations instead of just making an intentionally trash DarkRP server. Was never sure how I felt about that bit of it regardless.
Any more things you'd like to see in Serious RP then? And if anyone's interested in helping get it started, feel free to ask as well.
Not sure about what I'd like to see, that's up to you, but still try to make it unique enough to encourage people to join in and see what's your server about. Everyone can run a vanilla install of something, but it's harder to make it unique. Be sure to work on that and make an unique experience for your players.
Fair enough, will have to look deeper into it.
Anyone else? Might just wait until S&box I suppose, lot of people telling me there isn't much interest in the game mods anymore.
If you change your mind and create a server before S&Box I personally wouldn't use DarkRP if you want to make a serious gamemode, I would recommend NutScript1.1, it's much better than DarkRP, you won't have to pay for the scripts off gmodstore, there are a lot of free things for NutScript that you have to pay for in DarkRP, and nutscript makes it easier to create addons that you want to make.
